Press pass: How to get? - 12-26-2005, 12:25 PM

I've seen several folks (this forum and others) refer to using a press pass in order to get a better shooting location at an event or to get free parking, free admission, etc. Just how does one obtain a press pass, say from the Star-Telegram?

if you working for Star Telegram, you editor or public relation getting press passes for you to cover an event. As eurotrash said, you must work for news publication, magazine, etc... you won't be able to get press pass for big events otherwise.

Avoid the online news organizations where they want you to pay them a membership fee and they'll give you a press pass... these passes won't get you into events by themselves... your ability to talk and convince the event organizers that your presence will benefit them (through publicity, or free photos, or whatever) in a way they won't get if they don't have YOU shooting there, that's what gets you in. Oh, and if you promise something and you do get in, you'd better be able to follow through on the promise...

Makes sense. The only reason I asked is some folks make it sound so easy: "Just get a press pass and you'll be able to shoot wherever you want." Yeah, right.

regular press pass, or whatever online will only allow you to get to really small events, like HS games, small concerts, etc... but not the higher level like College or Pro or big concerts.. but for small events most of the time is enough to have fe cams with huge white lenses
General press pass is more like your id and its it.
Each big event has their own press passes, even HS playoffs

I hate it when that (repeated posts) happens, as it does so frequently in the dpreview forums.

we're a lot different from DPreview.com

not that im a mirror image of the average TPF member by any means, but i honestly do not like DPreview as of late.

it seems like all the engineers we get in the store that claim to be "pro nature/wildlife photographers" are the ones who will order like 5grand worth of lenses and stuff, run a few "tests" in store and then say meh it isnt sharp enough for me.

i think they refer to them as "pixel peepers"

one guy recently told me that he had bought the 20D with 85mm 1.2L and the 50mm 1.4 AND a d70 and returned the Canon stuff after the nikon kit lens (18-70mm) was way sharper than both the Canon glass at all apertures. he also went as far to say that the "brokah" wasnt good at all (remember this is the 85mm 1.2L!!) and as a person of Japanese decent that offends me!! (haha not really) he started saying "the forums this" and "the forums that" and then he told me DPreview lens talk when i asked him what forum. there are some good information there as well as a nice archive of past info to get at with ease, but it seems there are def some newbz up on there as of late. btw thats cool that "we all have to start somewhere" but you kinda have to be a fly on the wall when these guys start spouting off at my co-workers and i about "you dont know anything you are just a kid" then try to justify themselves by saying that "they used to shoot their dad's F before i was born." im young and may not know a lot but shiet that can get to someone after a while.

[/rant]

[disclaimer for those who will get upset: take this with a grain of salt, i know someone else feels me, kind of on the same lines as when you get treated like crap at a retaurant just because you look young...ok well maybe thats less people than i thought. :) ]
