I'm here.
At the bar having lunch now.

Is it me or is it freezing in there?

David Hobby was outstanding. Really enjoyed the layering technique. Worth the price by himself. McNally up next...

And yeah, it's freezing in here!

Was there and well worth the price of admission.

Took six pages if notes with pictures of Hobby's discussion. Joe was way too fast to keep notes, so tried to absorb and watch. The audio record button on my iPhone for some reason was on for the last half of the day. ooooops. :)

I did think it was funny that the one day only "deals" the adorama guy was offering was quite funny. One quick search in the net proved most could be found as inexpensive, or better.

Watch out Austin. It's about to get crazy.

I was there! Drove two hours through crazy traffic to and from. Really enjoyed David more than Joe because he moved so fast but got something out of both of them. Definitely worth the money. And yes, everyone at our table was freezing! Why do they always keep conference rooms so cold?

There were roundtables and chairs set up for over 350. Once I sat down, I never saw if the far reaching corners were full. There were definitely over 300. The conf center did a great job of only putting 5 chairs per table so no one sat with their back to the stage.

Get there early. There was a line of 25-30 people waiting to get in at 9:00 before the doors opened.

In review, the presentation was well worth it IF:

- You are weak using off-camera flash and want to know more about portrait shooting using 1-4 flash heads.

- You have a working knowledge of camera and flash terminology.

It's not for the novice and they don't dwell on settings although they do call them out and will talk in terms of "stops". For instance they might tell you that the fill light is -2 stops difference from the key light. If you understand this, you'll love the presentation.

David Hobby (The Stobist) and Joe McNally are very different shooters and they have A LOT of fun taking shots at each other. They do their presentations separately.

David is very methodical and has some good tips and techniques that are easy to follow and understand. Joe is frenetic and moves fast! There's no note taking here although many of the people around me were recording and taking pictures of every slide and setup shown (they had fun with this as well). While David's examples were real-world, Joe's were not so hot but the point he was making was how to shape light and watching him work was amazing. The guy has a deeeeeep understanding of how to manipulate light. Watching him shoot stop action with one SB-900 from 75 feet away was just COOL!

At $99 it was well worth it.

I envy the folks in Austin today as they gave a hint as what special thing they were going to do for them down there. Have fun!

Joe
