Bluebonnets on Sugar Ridge Road near Bristol - 04-01-2011, 10:49 AM

The rolling hills at Sugar Ridge Road near Bristol, Texas (about an hour south of downtown Dallas - and a few miles east of I-45) are at peak this week.

I've scouted a lot of bluebonnet locations in the last several years and this one can't be beat for hills literally covered with wildflowers.

Highly recommended.

Here's a shot from yesterday:

Hey Jeff,

Great shot! I've been looking for a place like this for years (not hard but keeping my ears open).

How acessible is the area? I'd love to make the trip down there and spend a few hours shooting.

Thanks!

Joe

Accessible as all get out, Joe - I stopped the car and literally walked five feet into the field to get this shot. There are two hills covered with bluebonnets less than 1/4 a mile apart. One hill has the view you see here looking west and the other is in a little dip in the landscape just east of this. If you will click on the photo above and go to my Flickr stream, you'll see where it is on the map. Took me about 75 minutes to get there from my place in Corinth yesterday.

The flowers are at peak and will probably get trampled a bit this weekend when the crowds descend on the Ennis area. Most of Ennis is not at peak yet, but Sugar Ridge Road sure is.....

Hope you can make it out there soon.

Spring Green at Bluebonnet Hill by Jeff Clow, on Flickr

Here's the other hill that I found covered with bluebonnets on Sugar Ridge Road yesterday (Thursday, March 31)....it is just east of the first shot above.

This is a great place. I went last Sunday but it was windy and overcast, so the sky was washed out not allowing for shots like these.

I tried shots with the sky cropped out.

Thanks for the tip Jeff, I went out and drove the rode during the week. While the bluebonnets are a little light this year, the patches out there are really very nice.

Here's my take...

Very nice work guys! Sorry I couldn't make the trip down there with you Jeff... life's got me in a "rear naked choke" at the moment.

So is it not too late to head there this weekend? With your shot toward the west, I'm thinking early morning might be best, right?

There are shots both looking east and looking west....and I think the bluebonnets would still be in pretty good shape this coming weekend.

I really like your photos, Jeff. Sugar Ridge Road is definitely on my list for the next bluebonnet season.

Hoping there may be a nice spot farther south around Waco. I'll be heading there on Monday with the camera. I have been all over south Texas with little luck.
