Dallas Skyline - 01-04-2006, 11:26 PM

I would like to get a chance to shoot the Dallas Skyline, but I have heard many stories about the place to take the best photos from is not in the best part of town. I was wondering, would anybody be up to meeting Sunday Evening to go and shoot the Skyline. Also, I have no idea where this parking garage is, so if you know where it is, could you pass along the info. Thanks a million!

I believe the parking lot in reference might be off Hall Street, just south of the Baylor Jack and Jane Hamilton Heart and Vascular Hospital. There are two seperate garages. Both giving good views to the skyline.

I was thinking that maybe some people might want to meet at Pioneer Plaza just north of the Convention Center this Sunday to shoot in and around City Hall, the Trail Drive Sculpture and the old graveyard right there. Then the group could drive over to Methodist for skyline shots closer to sunset-about a 10 minute drive to that parking garage.

You can see that Colorado is just a hop skip and jump from the Plaza.

BTW parking meters are free on Sundays around the Plaza Area. I was there last Sunday and it was a bit crowded but still able to get a few good shots.

The parking garage I believe is around $1 or 2 in quarters on Sundays at the hospital.

Two weeks ago I went up one of the Baylor garages and when I left there was no attendent and the arm was up. But that may have been becuase of the holidays. Probably a good idea to bring a few dollars.

As soon as I get my Canon GR-20 grip for the remote switch I'd like to try the Methodist location.

Hmmm, I would like to do Sunday but I need to check on a couple of things schedule-wise. When you guys nail down a time/place to meet then I can give a yes or no.

Something to think about:

I suggest call and confirm with the hospital staff before you shoot. I shot the July 4th Dallas Fireworks from Methodist, and while it is a public hospital, it was unclear if their policy allows this. The administrators at the desk said this was not allowed, yet a security guard allowed me to shoot. Owing to my naivete, I probably didn't properly seek the permission as I should've. We should be respectful of Methodists perspective, otherwise you can imagine a specific and clear rule: No photographing from the parking garage. I am sure a simple call can go a long way to ensure we retain good public relations.

A backup location in South Dallas can be found at the base of the Trinity River, near the Oak Farms Dairy and Oak Cliff Founders Park (Old Zang Road).

Good Luck.

Scott
