Tagalong assistant for Denton wedding - 01-18-2012, 06:47 PM

Edit - post deleted due to my full admission of not handling it in the best manner. I was trying to to be open and honest, but in retrospect - following the admonition of others - I've accepted its better to work on changing myself than expecting others to deal with my faults...

Ha, the first lines remind me of an infomercial (complete with the images of people acting like idiots). Good luck with finding someone!

I don't actually need an assistant, I can always call my 16yr old son and 19yr old daughter into action - both of whom have assisted me many times. But I figure why not let some others experience the process?

I can guarantee there is no better way to find out if you want to have anything to do with wedding photography than working purely as an assistant. You get to experience everything with out any of the pressure to preform. Well, some pressure I suppose, but no RISK at any rate. Plus you can learn so much so fast when its all new!

Wow - not one single response.

Back when this was "Texas Photo Forum" we'd have people practically begging for stuff like this.

Or maybe the Craigslist phenomenon is finally fading out and enough people have learned just how challenging wedding photography really is...???

Oh well, guess its back to my built in workforce...oh dear daughter... :-)

So let's take a look at why you haven't gotten any responses to your listing...

Well this right off the back would keep me from reading any further. I mean seriously who wants to spend 10+ hours with a guy that is admitting in advance to being "grumpy" an is requiring that we suck it up and have "thick skin". I know I surely wouldn't... I would have just stopped reading at this point and moved on.

In fact if you were indeed a nice person to work with, liked to have fun and not sell yourself as a "grumpy" photographer hell I'd prolly PAY YOU the $100 to be your assistant for the day and learn from you. Think about it.

So let's see here... another red flag. Either "$50 in cash or $100 via paypal" when the ad clearly stated $100 for the gig. Had I made it through the "grumpy" portion of the listing then this one would have sent me away. I mean why the difference in pay? I mean 10+ hours worked is 10+ hours worked right? Why the difference? This makes no sense and like I said ANOTHER red flag to potential "assistants"

So you post this orignal tagalong opportunity thread on Wednesday January 18th at 6:47 PM and the event is to occur on the morning of Saturday January 21st? That's pretty short notice even for my liking and I'm pretty flexible when it comes to things like this let alone a potential taker that may have a family and kids.

Not only is it such short notice but the thread was posted in the Dallas/Ft Worth specific section and NOT our dedicated Wedding Discussions section which garners much more attention and is the proper location to have this opportunity listed since more potential takers are found browsing THAT section since its related to everything wedding related.

Lastly, the post icon you chose to use in listing this thread is which is specifically set aside for sharing photo locales and when people see such an icon they immediately associate it with a photographer sharing a cool spot to shoot photos at and nothing more.

Those are just more reasons as to why you may not have gotten as many takers as you would have liked on your opportunity... Just a hunch.

Actually you're right... I retract everything I previously said. All of those items I listed above could not have possibly been attributed to the lack of interest in your tagalong opportunity. Thanks to you I now see that it's clearly the website name change from TexasPhotoForum over to Pixtus that is to blame. I mean the new name does mean a whole different set of keystrokes and all...

My apologies....

And to think, I was thinking this was an ad someone pulled off of Craigslist as an example of how not to advertise. I wish you luck.

My sincere appreciation to each of you for chiming in and letting me know how I might have presented this opportunity better and therefore been a greater benefit to both myself and others who may have been interested.

I made no attack on your decision to re-brand Abel. My point was this forum used to be LOCALIZED to Texas and as such there was considerably more activity around LOCAL opportunities.

I actually think there are more local activities than before.

Fair enough - I'm also not on here as much as I used to be so you're probably right.

As my first design teacher taught us: Always have your built-in dung detector working.

Translation: In any situation, have the objectivity to realize when you're the one who's full of crap.

In this case, I'm the guilty one. Apologies offered, forgiveness requested.

I never said anything about changing yourself... Just the fact that you blamed the site in regards to say back when it was TPF people would have been all over your offer.

I simply pointed out reasons as to why you hadn't gotten any takers. Ie. thick skin needed, pay discrepancy, 3 days notice, wrong section, misleading icon etc

That's all No worries.. If you're looking to offer this opportunity again in the future I am sure plenty would be willing.. Just post it in the wedding section where similar threads get plenty of responses.

Thanks.
