Dallas World Aquarium - Friday - March 3rd - 03-02-2006, 12:08 PM

I am escaping from the office tomorrow and doing something equally as stressful, but a lot more fun! I am going to make another attempt to get successful photos at the Dallas World Aquarium. The subject matter is wonderful. The natural and artificial lighting is quite a challenge that I am going to find a way around if it kills me. A group of us went last week and managed a few good shots between the four of us. I am going to try again and see if I can do any better with tweaking my settings. I already brought the fastest equipment I owned last week, so all I have left is tweaking.
It opens at 10:00 if anyone wants to join in.

Driving directions to the DW Aquarium:

http://www.dwazoo.com/directions.html

FYI - I shot with a Canon 20D and a 10D with a 70-200 mm 2.8, a 50 mm 1.4 and an 85 mm 1.8. I used all three lenses, depending on the subject matter and lighting.

PS - The Mayan Cafe is just inside the entry door - I will wait around there and photograph the penguins to see if anyone shows up to join in the fun...

That's a great place to go. My son is going there on a field trip next week. Watch what time you go b/c they get big groups of school kids. I have a friend that was a diver for them and would go down and feed the manatees and such. I've actually never shot there, but I did get to watch them feed the Anaconda, which they only do every 6 months. I also conquered my fear of fuzzy spiders by holding the tarantula...YUK!! Anyway, I can't make it this time, but have fun! They've really expanded the place.

Sometimes impromptu events are the most fun! Besides, I didn't know my office would drive me crazy enough that I had to "escape" tomorrow. But, since I have a membership to the DWA, I can plan a trip for March 3rd of next year to give you plenty of time to plan...
I conceed that there was not much notice, but since I just found this website three days ago, and didn't learn how to "create a thread" until today.... oh well....

PS - I will probably go next Friday also if my photos do not turn out better than last week's.... That gives you a week's notice for those that like more advance notice in order to "plan". But, if I do not leave the office and "escape" tomorrow behind the camera, I might "pop". It has been a rough week. I never have a bad day behind the camera. There is always something new to "capture"; even the ordinary becomes extrodinary between the camera's abilities and Photoshop's creativity...
It relieves stress.........ssss....sssss....

Donna -

I have been there a couple of times but not with my camera. I've wanted to though. I'd love to go tomorrow but can't. Maybe next week. By the way, did you shoot handheld or use a monopod or tripod? I don't know about restrictions.
Thanks.

Bob,
Tripods are not allowed. Monopods are, but they are a pain with so many people, so I tried it handheld with limited success.

Thanks, Donna. That was what I expected the answer to be. There isn't a lot of elbow room in that place and I figured I would have to handhold as a practical matter.

tripods arent allowed? That stinks. I tried it with Monopod AND handheld and didnt get near as many good shots. That place is kind of dark. Only thing I can recommend is shooting in a higher ISO and then using noise ninja post process. Wish I could join ya but I have to work. Good luck.

I took some pictures of salt water aquarium at my office and all of them turns out bad because of the glass. Any tips on what to do. I was using a prime 50mm lense and my regular kit lense with high ISO. The picture didn't turn out sharp.

Last minute is fine and fun. I just wanted to use that line. I just heard it the other day. This seemed like a good op to use it. L0L=)

What's the price to go to this place?

I just started with this hobby. Still learning on how to use my 20D, tricks and technique. Just wish I have more time to play with it.
