BUT, no cigar yet, for you've not specifically identified the original picture . . . but what the heck, we're among friends, and I want to hear the story.

The pool pictured is part of the "Panther City Fountain" which is immediately west of the Flatiron Building which itself has lions (panthers) carved into its exterior walls. The Fountain is graced by this peaceful, dozing "Panther."

The story starts in Italy.
A gentleman in the Tuscany region of Italy needs a very complicated neurosurgery. He is referred to a well known neuro surgeon here in Ft. Worth. The operation was a complete success and some new friendships were established between the neurosugreon and the Italian patient. The Italian patients brother happens to be a very well known sculpture. The neuro sugeon has purchased the flat iron building in order to refurbish it into offices, condos, music studio, etc. It seems the neuro surgeon is also an accomplished rythm and blues singer and harmonica player in a local band comprised of other doctors and other professionals. The neruosurgeon engages the Italian sculpture to carve a Panther to adorn the park that is next to the newly acquired flat iron building.
The sculpture finds out that the neurosurgeon is also a musician and invites him and his band to Italy to perform. The trip was a success, and the band is invited back again to perform at the opening ceremonies of the annual "flag throwing and cross bow" competitions. Since I now am a member of this band, I get to go to Italy, perform, sight see, and generally have a great time. Since the sculpture is an Italian hero, we were treated like royalty.

p.s. the neruosurgeon was nearly killed in an accident while installing the Panther.

Tom, a great story because you're involved. BUT, what's the rest of the story, as Paul Harvey would tell it? How was the good doctor nearly killed?

BTW: Your testimony demonstrates how a relatively big city like Fort Worth still retains a small town quality.

Exclamation How "Panther City" Got The Nickname - 03-06-2006, 02:28 PM

Some may not be aware of how Fort Worth became the "Panther City. From this web site: http://home.earthlink.net/~bronzedragon/panthers/index.html

There's the following explanation:

The Story of The Sleeping Panther

In 1873, a nationwide depression was underway and many believed Fort Worth to be doomed economically. Robert E.Cowart, a former Fort Worth resident who practiced law in Dallas, wrote the Dallas Herald that he had "been to a meeting in Fort Worth the other day and things were so quiet I saw a panther asleep on Main Street, undisturbed by the rush of men or the hum of trade."

B.B. Paddock, editor of the 'Fort Worth Democrat', took these comments as a challenge and had a new masthead engraved with a panther lying in front of the bluff and the motto "Where the Panther Laid Down."

The intended insult has become an enduring symbol of the city's strength. Throughout Fort Worth, panthers have appeared over the years, carved on downtown buildings (the Flatiron, and the Intermodal Transportation Center), crouching on Fort Worth Police badges, painted on fire trucks and cheered as mascots by Paschal High School students and Fort Worth Cats baseball fans.

Also, here's a picture of Fort Worth's Flatiron Building, modeled after the one in New York City:
