Next workshop poll - 03-07-2006, 11:26 AM

First I want to take the opportunity to thank all those who have attended one or more of my prior three workshops. It's been a great learning experience for me as well as a catalyst to push my skills forward.

Greg and I would like to start the planning process on our next DF/W workshop to be held at his studio near Love Field. We will be taking all the great suggestions from the last workshop to heart and coming up with all new sets and a new format for the next one. We will most likely have three or four models again, but may choose to limit the attendance and run both days on the weekend. I will most likely open the attendance to the Garage Glamour board if we decide to go to two days so we can fill up. The dates we are looking at are either 4/22-23 or 4/29-30.

I want to keep the price in the range of $200 total for the day including covering the cost of the models, MUA, and studio overhead.

If you have other suggestions, please feel free to post them here or use PM/email if you would rather do so in private.

I liked the number of models, but if you're going up to the $200 dollar range, then it would be nice to have slightly fewer people... Such as 3 groups of 5. Would give everyone a little more elbow room.

Either of those dates works for me.

I' d love to hear what "much higher cost" actually is but I would totally be there again if I could have significantly more shooting time. I would prefer different models simply so I don't have a portfolio full of 4 people.

Either of those weekends should work for me, and I definitely want to attend.

I think a lot of it depends. As someone who has been to all of your workshops. I can say that they have significantly improved time after time. I mean the first one we had Jake and Captain Tom as the models for pete's sake!

And at $40, that was not a problem.

If the price is going to top the $200 mark, I have to be honest and say that some things would need to be improved over the last one.

Actually, one idea may be to hold it over 2 days.

One day in the $150 range with more photographers, same number of models, less sets, less shooting time.

Day Two in the $300 range with 1/2 the number of shooters and more sets and more shooting time.

These are all great ideas and feedback!!!

First off, unless there is majority requesting one or more of the same models, we will have all new girls. The format will change so that everyone will be able to shoot all the models in every set/outfit. My original plan was not to make the images 'cookie cutter' but now that I see how different every shot was, I'm not so worried about that. We will change sets and outfits when everyone has had a chance. With three shooting areas, I hope that the line at any one station will be manageable.

I think that a two day event like Jim suggested would be excellent.

.
And you didn't sell those shots ?? Missed opportunity there....

I would be interested as long as the cost doesn't grow out of control. We know you aren't making a huge profit on these, and have to make a living as well. I am more available on Sunday than Saturday.

That's why I'm asking the questions to make sure that we're all happy with the outcome. I think we can do 3 models and 15 shooters or 4 and 20 for $200 and $170 respectively, but I'm still crunching the numbers.

The whole idea is to give folks the opportunity to work with very good models at a price that you could not do by yourself in a professional studio environment.

Erin, I don't think we would go much smaller than 12 shooters with 4 models (might be overkill at a 3:1 ratio). My estimate would be around $280 for that kind of event. I think that 12 shooters with 3 models would be just about as good for $250.

Once you creap up towards $300 per day, your looking at nude workshops. I don't think I'm quite ready for that.... yet

when do you think you'll hold another lighting class? It seems that the workshops are trending more towards "working with high profile models" for portfolio's. I want to attend a workshop that is more educational on light set ups, positioning, lingo and shooting. Just wondering :)?

3 models would be plenty. I'd rather have more sets than more models. And the sets don't have to be elaborate either. Just more wardrobe changes completely changes the look of the photo's thus giving you more images that could be potentialy used in a your portfolio.

My suggestion - 03-07-2006, 04:30 PM

I think that 3 models is good, less shooters, like someone else suggested 3 sets of 4-5 shooters tops. Should have the models stay at the same sets in the morning and maybe change outfits and then switch sets in the afternoon.

Please sign me up for the next shoot!!! Oh yeah, the $200 fee is good only if you have less shooters, will give each more time to spend witt he models, the last shoot made me feel rushed at some sets.
