I was just sent this and I thought others here might like to see it:

Just a reminder that the Dallas Zoo's Photo Safari program is about to
begin. The first safari for April is SOLD OUT! Dates for the rest of
the season are May 20, June 24 and September 23. Come out and join
Cathy Burkey for an unforgettable photographic experience! The new and
improved gorilla habitat will be open just in time for the May 20
safari as well as the new Nile Crocodile exhibit and the Rhino Iguana
exhibit. Also new are the Saddlebill Stork exhibit and Birds Landing,
our interactive bird exhibit will be open for the June 24 safari. Look
for a new penguin exhibit scheduled to open in the fall. For more
information or to register for a safari, call 214-944-3393.

And don't forget to come out and take your best shot for the Dallas
Zoo's Feathers Fur and Scales photography contest. This year's contest
promises to be the best yet! For details, see www.dallaszoo.com.

It was about $85, I think...

A bunch of us did the one in June.. it was great, but it was HOT.

Brad, i don't remember paying $85. Couldn't be more than $40...just can't think of the price right now, i would have to guess between $15-40. $10 off for Dallas zoo member.

What's that 'film' they talk about on the web page ?

Is this a different zoo to the one in Forth Worth ?

Is it worth a trip to go on one of these tours ? Do you get more/ different access than normal ?

This sounds like it might be really interesting. I'd like to know as well what if any behind the scenes action we can look forward to capturing. What a great find. I never know stuff like this goes on. How do you find events such as this?

"film" as in memory card these days...LOL

Gordon, eh.... i hate to say this but only diff is they placed food at few locations that's more photo friendly. It started bit too late, 8:30am i remember, 7am would be nice. Zoo would be packed with visitors in an hour or two during the weekend. No much left to shot... and nothing really behind the scene you'll get accessed to... and nothing you can't get going there alone.

I won't try again with the safari but if they let us do safari monotrail, i will go there. That's one thing you can't really photo well with regular monorail session. Rail runs bit too fast for my taste.

Eh, it's not too bad. I went with my son, and g/f a few weeks back. Was using my Nikon N65, and a 35-300 (I think it's 4.5-6.7), and was fighting with my son who decided he wanted to sit on my lap, the motion of the monorail, and the fact I decided to play with some settings. I ended up with a couple of (what I'd consider) OK shots. I'm sure with a decent lense, and better experience with the camera, I dare say it'd be quite easy to pull off better shots that ones like this, or this (note these were scanned in at a terrible resolution from the developed film, so they have the additional affect of looking terrible [though no excuse for me being a total amateur anyway]).

I've heard the San Diego Zoo tour is good. A bit closer to home, is the Fossil Rim anmial park. A few friends from another web site organised a tour there a couple of years ago and we got some great access and very helpful tour guides/ drivers. The weather was terrible but we still got some good shots - I'd recommend that one a lot (about an hour south of Dallas I think - maybe closer)

Photos from Fossil Rim

The McKinney Tiger Shoots are also good if Tom is still organising them.

I love cheetahs. Those are gorgeous shots of them.
