Unique And/Or Old Churches - 04-10-2006, 03:54 PM

That's the theme of our new portfolio..... can anyone suggest some cool looking/ unique looking churches in the DFW area?

I know one really nice one - Not sure what it's called, but it's close by St. Paul/ Ross Ave (somewhere around there). The architecture is unique....

please share some areas and I'd love to share my portfolio afterwards..

St. Ann on Sandy Lake and Moore in Coppell has a great copper dome on the top. The building is only a few years old though.

I long for the ancient churches back home in the UK. The church I got married in is 300 years old. There is a 650 year old church in the same town.

New Sweden/ Schulenburg area of Texas might be worth a trip, the Dutch painted churches are quite unusual. Depends on your definition of 'DFW area' though.

I miss old architecture too. Around here a couple of decades old is time to pull down and rebuild. I used to buy my paper in a shop build in the 14th century and drive through walls to go to work built in AD51

Gordon, I googled these places and boy you were right.... I never knew places like this existed right in our backyard. It will have to do for now until we can save up to go to Europe/ or even NE US.....

We are making plans now.... Thanks again.

baby blue,

I feel like I'm revealing the best kept secret in North Central Texas, tho I've posted from it many times. The 4th church listed in your link in Lindsay, Tx. is really something to behold. I lived 2 blocks down Main Street for a number of years. St Peter's is in a class that rivals any church in the entire state IMHO. My mom's family built and maintains the "South Prayer Chapel" shown on the site. Be prepared for low light shooting inside. About 1 hr north of DFW up I-35, and 4 miles west on Hwy 82. Stop in for some great BBQ on "the strip" out on 82.

worth the drive.

I rode my bike around most of the painted churches one day last year. They are certainly very interesting to see. Some are in better repair than others - one was being totally renovated at the time but they were kind enough to let us take a look around inside.

Two that I know of are the Lena Pope Chapel designed by Fay Jones, in Fort Worth (I-30 and Hulen) and the Our Lady of Dallas Cistercian Monastery in Dallas by Gary Cunningham.

I love the old building in Europe very much.

Talk to you later.
