Smile Weston Gardens - Annual Pilgrimage - 04-19-2006, 05:39 PM

Today, my wife and I took advantage of the cooler weather and made our annual trek to Weston Gardens -- to buy stuff to plant and to take pictures. Always a nice locale:

Plus, I took several IR's; stay tuned.

I was there in late February for a photo class. The Demonstration Garden looks like it would be interesting. Is it in full bloom now?

Steve, there's very little blooming there versus a year ago this time of year. I think the drought slowed down or killed many things. I know the Iris blooms have been pathetic this year in most of North Texas.

do they still have all the signs up about professional photographers? (guess that shouldn't bother me none! )

funny you mention the irises. my back yard has tons of them, and i think i saw about 2 blooms this spring.

I was at the Weston last week; I have a meeting with their professional landscaper lady to help design the layout of my new home landscape. The wife and I wan't to go Texas native plants as much as possible at the new place.

They seem to know their stuff, Steve. We've relied on their advice in a couple of situations and been pleased with the results. "Texas native" - especially "North Texas" - souunds right for these times: excessive temps, drought, high water bills, etc. If I were starting over, I'd reduce the grass lawn in my landscape that needs to be mowed and watered by about 75-80%.

I read one sign on the gate to the Demonstration Gardens re: "Professional / Commercial photographers;" however, because of the "releases" referred to therein, like you, I interpreted the restrictions to apply only to people who expect to make money somehow from what they're shooting at Weston Gardens, e.g., wedding party, Better Homes & Gardens magazine, etc. Nobody questioned my lugging around the F707; guess I didn't look professional enough.

Sounds like my 70-200L wouldn't make it past the front gate. Bummer.
