something else i need to say. i had not used the s7000 since i've had the ist and even though fuji's EVF is suppose to be one of the finest on the market, i think i'll stick with the ist. there is nothing like real time viewing. really can't explain it but when using the fuji it was like viewing from a different dimension..

Roy I think we both did pretty darn good with how harsh the light was and us not being experienced (at least me). I looked at your first 5 shots and I went "hey I got that shot and that shot and that one..." Great minds think a lot.
I posted one of mine in the sports section. I'll post a few more as I get them done.

Roy,
I certainly can empathize with you. Shooting into the sun made for some tough shots to start with. Then I realized that I had -1/3 stop exposure compensation dialed in accidentally. Oh well, it was a learning experience.
Here's what I managed to get with my Nikon D100 + 70-200mm VR combo:

it's unbelievable how close some of the shots are idetical. definately like both of yours better than mine of the two planes together. it looks like i may not be the one that used a little artistic licanse with the pix. most of mine were underexposed by at least -2ev. could not get the sky and the plane right so ''del'' to the sky and ''ctrl+V'' to it it.
i've got some good cloud pix and am going to use them and see what they look like.
where were you both shooting from?

I was shooting immediately to the left of show center point, a couple feet back from the fence.
I shot in RAW and used Nikon Capture to process the shots to TIFs. Primarily, that processing consisted of adding +1/3 to +2/3 stop exposure compensation, and boosting the color saturation a bit. I took the TIFs into Photoshop, cropped a little as needed, resized and sharpened for the web and saved as JPGs.
My personal preference is not to take any artistic license with the shots other than correcting the exposure and color saturation if needed, followed by minor cropping if necessary (usually just to get it into a 4:3 aspect ratio for the web).
Robar, I'd suggest that you could likely get better quality results by not altering the images as drastically as you are. The halos around the jets from doing the cut and paste are more distracting to me than if they were a little dark. Play with the levels in PS, but don't digitally forge the background. Just my 2 cents.

I was shooting just to the left of the control truck right by where that small fina plane was parked before it went to do its show.

BB | i'll try that. mainly i just wanted to get something at that point. i haven't shot much in raw so it's all a pretty new experience.
we were practically standing right next to each other.

Roy,
Personally, I like the originals better. Just curious, what type of metering were you using? The sky did turn out fairly bright in some of those shots, so I'm guessing the camera was metering primarily off of the dark jets.
Because the BA F-18s are so dark and because I didn't want to overexpose the sky as a result, I used matrix metering rather than spot or center-weighted. Not familiar enough with the Pentax to know what your metering options were, but that might have made a difference, just for future reference.
Don't recall anyone matching your wife's description (big crowd), but there was a guy shooting a Canon 1D (or 1D Mk II) with something like a 600mm telephoto on it. The thing was a machine gun. My fiance described it as being the size of a small child.

i was using center-weight.
i should have set the cam to at least +2ev as everything i shot was overexposed by at least that

it seems everyone so far who has posted pics on here was using digital. I was wondering if anyone used film. I did and if anything turned out worth showing I will post them on here. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
