Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge - 04-11-2005, 01:52 PM

Has anyone been to this wildlife refuge near Sherman? I saw something about it when I was in Sherman yesterday, but did not know it was there. It looks like it might provide some good shots of migratory and other birds. I'd like to hear from anyone who's been there.

Thanks.

I've been there. Don't wait til the heat of summer to go (although if you go early it wouldn't be so bad).

I don't know much about birding, but if you can spend a few hours there, it would be worth your time.

Don't pass up a chance to explore Hagermann's. An SUV would be good, but you can navigate all of the roads in a passenger car. My PT is pretty low, and it only scraped once.

you have probably missed the waterfowl migration by now, but go up there anyway and find everything for next year. You will find enough to make this year's trip worth your while.

a couple from this past Feb.

my 717 and TCON-17 wasn't really enough. you need some serious glass unless you are going to set up a blind and stay in it.

There is a lot of territory to explore.

Highly recommended.

Jerry gave you some good details and I'll just add my $.02 worth to reiterate the need for long glass up there. You can get some nice wide shots if you don't have the super-teles but if you can get your hands on something over 400mm (rent, borrow, beg :D) you can get some nice shots. Here's a few from my trips up there.

All shot with D1X, 600mm with and without the 1.4x TC.

I was there in October and saw quite a bit of action. I returned March 5th and it was completely dead.

If any of you shoot with Real gear (Nikon of course) , I have a few pieces of big glass - more than I can use at one time anyway. I'd be happy to plan a joint trip when the season is right and would be glad to share. I've got this glass:
80-400 VR, 300 2.8 AF-S, 200-400 VR AF-S, and 600 f4 AF-S, and teleconverters 1.4x, 1.7x, 2x (these TC's won't work on the 80-400 or any non-AF-S lens). Give me a shout next fall.
