Scott's Workshop - Images & Reviews - 06-25-2006, 03:55 PM

Let's get it started here guys:

First off and most importantly, HUGE thanks to Scott Watters & Greg Daniels for all the time, effort, skill and help they put in to these workshops!

First, I'll throw out one image of each of the three models:

Tara:

Tiffany:

Crystal:

Review: Again, Scott and Greg pull off a fantastic workshop. Scott talks about the day, gives details about the setups and the models and then while you shoot both he and Greg walk around answering questions about anything and everything to do with studio lighting, posing, etiquette and of course, lighting.

The girls were beautiful, friendly and very different from a shooting approach (Thanks Scott!). They each knew how to pose, look and take instruction to the point where shooters could tell them what to do or just let them do their thing and work on other aspects such as lighting and shadows.

The only area I felt wasn't as strong as I would have liked was the lingerie the girls chose. All three outfits were, I felt, a bit weak and 2 out of the 3 clashed with the background. (The rest of the outfits were right on.). The only suggestion I would have for Scott & Greg is (if they know) to suggest to the girls what color clothes would be preferable for the sets they have in mind.

Amy the make-up artist was also fantastic. Not only was she diverse but kept checking up on the girls as the shoots went on. One of the hairstyles (see image #1 above) was so over-the-top it was a joy to shoot.

So again, thanks to Scott and Greg. You guys do this again, and I'll be there.

That first shot is a winner. I think I would have included more of the necklace or had it removed. My two cents. =) All great shots and lighting.

I should say that I have about a 90% keep rate with this shoot (unheard of for me).

Also, in the last photo we were experimenting with a gold reflector to bring out the color of her hair (thus the shot). You can see the gold overdone a bit on her shoulder (blame the reflector holder -grin).

That first shot is friggin outstanding! The other 2 aren't two shabby either.

I love the classy outfit in the 2nd shot on the cargo net. The pose and camera angle really make that shot!

Joe, this first shot of Tara is incredible! Posting first three of mine, but first wanted to give big props to Scott and Greg for organizing this workshop. What a great shoot it was... beautiful models, Amy, the MUA did amazing things, sets were well designed, and everyone had plenty of chances to shoot each model in different settings.

Scott and Greg are very knowledgeable and offer great tips (especially to 'newbies' like myself). It was also a pleasure to meet other 'TPFers'... and learn from them as well. Too bad I had to drive back to Austin and missed the dinner. Next time, will make a weekend out of this.

I guess this is as good a thread as any to throw in some images of mine for critique. I never get to work with a studio or professional models, so my creativity is somewhat lacking. I appreciate any comments, as I'm hoping this will help my portrait business.

(Thanks for the frames, Joe!)

The first was my personal favorite. I should have had more depth of field in the last; I wish I had a do-over on that one.

Nice work Joe, Marek, and Tom!!!

Joe, that first shot ROCKS! Wasn't Tara a total doll?

Marek, I love the feel of your post processing.

Tom, I love the first 4 and agree on the DOF with the last one.

I happy to hear you guys had a good time.

Thanks!

Oh well--I was there to learn, right? I'll remember that next time. Rookie mistake.

Thanks, Joe. Yours are great, too.

As for me, I did little more than show up, ask a bunch of stupid questions, and point my camera in the right direction.

Point is, this workshop is definitely worth anyone's time who is trying to build a portfolio.

Marek your third shot is GREAT!

I may want to think hard about making one of these the next time it is offered.
