Looking for Armadillos - 07-07-2006, 11:23 PM

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go to capture some armadillo photos? I've been in Dallas for 5 years, and I have never had the opportunity to photograph the state animal, which seems kind of odd. I'm not counting the squished ones.

Living just south of Dallas we used to see them all the time. In the last 5 years I have seen maybe 2 alive. As Dallas and surrounding areas grow, we see less and less wildlife here.

I see them out at Fossil Rim sometimes and I've seen them at Hagerman north of Dallas.

I've got a few that live in my yard and pasture That's not a good thing. They get along fine with the skunks, owls, and coyotes though

I see them ever so often at night when I'm driving around Mesquite. I'm not sure where you could go where you know you'd see them, I just happen across them ever so often. I know where you can find beavers at night though. Hehehe. Not that it helps you much :D

Ask Russell from Childress.

He's probably the best wildlife photographer on here....if not the best I've ever seen.

Some good suggestions, I'll try the Fort Worth Nature Center. I fly out of Mesquite, so I am there quite often, but no luck on the armadillo search so far. I'll look more closely now that I know they are there.

Similarly for Fossil Rim. I was a docent there for a couple years, so I have been out there a lot. Maybe I'll go back very early (dawn?) to see if anything shows up. Incidentally if anyone is interested in a photo tour of Fossil Rim, I can arrange that.

If that doesn't work out, maybe Michael can arrange an armadillo photo shoot at his pasture. The ladies in McKinney get $50 per person for people to photograph the animals in their back yard...

I've seen a bunch of them at Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose. It's on the other side of the highway from Fossil Rim.

I agree that Hagerman Wildlife Refuge is a good place. Every time I have been there I come across several along the roadside. Other than during the hours of darkness, I see them mostly in the late afternoon as they start to come out and start hunting before it is dark. Sometimes earlier if it is overcast. May not be as close but probably as close or closer than Fossil Rim? Hagerman is on Lake Texhoma.

Well... there are 365 days in a year... If you come for 360 of them you might get a shot. (I really do have them in my pasture and yard though. I wish I didn't but I can't make myself "delete" them.).

"dillers" are nocturnal for the most part. I don't see them much during the day. Usually early morning or late evening.

Fossil Rim? Hmmm if you set a tour up I would like to know about it. I'm in Colorado right now but if I can make it I will. Except... I don't know where it is

I tell you.. I can't remember the park, I think its called the (Village Creek Historical Area) located in central Arlington south maybe a mile on Eastchase Pkwy from I30. About dusk, they come out of the WOODwork. Among other critters.. River Legacy in North Arlington probably is a good site too. Eitherway, dusk is your best bet...as soon as the sun starts setting, they start venturing out...

I live in S. Arlington and don't see many dillers.. but I have my share of visiting Peacocks each day... LOL

Oh and btw: I assume you mean live "Dillers"... I do see a few from time to time that aren't. :(

Hope this helps,

My wife and I used to live around Mt. Pleasant and east of there, there was a ton of Armadillo. Late evening is your best time to start watching for them or early morning.
