Canon Lens Rental in DFW? - 07-23-2006, 07:49 AM

Greetings. I'm a newcomer (joined up last week, just in time for the hacking incident) and was wondering if anyone knew of a good source in the DFW area for renting Canon lenses? Specifically, I'm interested in comparing the 24-105mm f/4 L IS and the 24-70mm f/2.8 L lenses. I've had my 300D for a few years now and am primarily interested in natural light portraits, typically outdoors (like at the Arboretum, where I spend a great deal of my free time) and typically of kids (like my one-year old and other family members and friends' kids)... Not doing anything professionally yet, but working hard at building equipment and skills to do just that in the coming years...

Here's one I took yesterday morning at the Arboretum, since it was the first day under 100 degrees in a while...

Thanks. I'll have to check them out. I don't make it over there that often (I'm 20 minutes the other side of Dallas), but it might be worth the drive if the prices were right and they had both lenses...

Welcome to TPF. A little closer to home would be Lightec and Competitive Cameras in Dallas. I believe Arlington Camera also rents gear.

I've been to Competitive Camera many times, but didn't know they rented lenses... I'll definitely have to check there. Thanks!

If your willing to rent online www.rentglass.com rents Canon glass. They rent Nikon too now, but it's still in beta and all the lenses are out of stock. The local places I know have already been mentioned.

I've been checking out www.rentglass.com for a while now. They have one of the lenses I'm interested in (no 24-70), but I've got the other one on my list to be notified for when it comes in stock. Hopefully I can catch it, because they're prices are quite a bit less than what I'm finding locally...

Yes, they do. However, the last time I checked, they didn't have a 24-105 for rent so I bought one. Glad I did!

So you like the 24-105 I take it? :) I've not tried that one or the 24-70 either, but am dying to do so (though my checkbook is hoping I hold off)...

I sure do. After doing a lot of general shooting out and about, lugging gear around, I decided it was time to buy a really good walkabout lens. After much research and satisfaction with my other L lens, I determined that this range would suit me fine. The IS has even come in handy a few times in low-light situations. I have a paid shoot later this week that will hopefully pay for the lens. :-)

Good to hear. I originally started considering the 24-70, after seeing quite a bit of photos from others that were in the style that I like, but am thinking the IS could possibly come in handy from time to time...
