My Weekend Trip (LOTS OF PICTURES!) - 07-24-2006, 09:55 AM

Over the weekend I took a trip to west Texas, I stopped at a few places on the way... Here are some of the pics!

Thurber, Texas
Ghost Town

Sweetwater, Texas

Over fifty years ago, Avenger Field earned the distinction of being the largest all-female air base in American history. It is now Sweetwater Airport as it was prior to World War II. The Women's Airforce Service Pilots, or WASP as it was known, actually began training women pilots in November 1942 at Howard Hughes field in Houston. In February 1943 Avenger Field became an all-female installation except for a few male instructors and other officers. Avenger Field remained a WASP training base until December of 1944 when it closed having fulfilled its mission. During its existence, 1,074 women pilots were trained at the facility including the thirty-seven that gave their lives in the service of their country

Lubbock....This is all I could find

Idalou, Texas

This place was kinda neat.....Fresh Produce, GREAT BUFFET! $5.50 all you can eat homemade food, pick your own apples in thier Apple orchard. Just a cool place.

Apple Country

Then on the way home on 114, going through the back roads.

The coal story is kinda cool. And the last one of the windmill is very nice! I wish it was a bit more sky than ground though.

wow, i've been to so many of those places!

The one in Thurber is outside the smokestack (i hope you stopped and ate there its real good!)

I go to school in lubbock so i've been in the buddy holly center a few times.

And i travel down 114 everytime i go out there! There are some great shots to be found on 114.

Good Job!

I love traveling places and stopping where i see good shots! (I tend to stop too many times and take forever to get home!)

Creative - when I saw these photos it was like they were begging to have Andy's (Blue Hour Photo) techniques applied.

Thumbs up Very Nice Job - 07-26-2006, 09:42 PM

I love photo journeys like this. Isn't it great to make a big old geographic loop with the camera and then relive the trip at the computer as you're processing the shots. Thanks for sharing; keep them coming.

Thank you for the comments....

A lot of these places are off of I-20, but the last few locations are not on any major highways.....well I guess 114 is a major highway that goes between Irving and Grapevine, but once you get past Texas Motor Speedway.....It's all country....all the way to Lubbock.
I passed some of the largest ranches in Texas and some of the smallest towns with a population of less than 300 and small canyons.

Next time you plan a trip and you're not in any hurry to get to your destination....take the back roads, or at least one way. You will see some things you didn't expect to see.

im surprised you didnt stop in benajamin (off 114) and take a picture of the state trooper painted on the building...

i guess you wouldn't have seen it since you drove home on 114. (didn't think about that until right now)

Nice shots. I love these middle of nowhere type pictures. The coal thing is very interesting to me and I love the drive in shots. It's fun (or it was before the gas price increase) to drive around and just see what you could find in a days time. Now I just sit at home and look at the pics everyone else is taking.

If you want to take a cool roadtrip, travel east out of Amarillo down Hwy 287, turn south on TX 207 at Claude, and wind your waythrough Palo Duro Canyon, across the plains, down through Tule Canyon, and then arrive at Silverton. From Silverton, go to quitaque and visit Caprock Canyons and then over to Turkey, Texas and the home of Bob Wills.

Lots of cool stuff to see over that way.

I wonder how much electricity they use turning all those fans I've been thru there... it wasn't that windy. I think that they should change fans... those don't work very good
