Off to Cancun first thing in the morning - 08-03-2006, 02:34 AM

Well my family will be off to Cancun tommorrow. This will be my first vacation I have taken most of my gear. I really hoping to capture some great photo's of the town. See how it's faired after the hurricane destroied most of it last year. Not sure about internert access down there so many I will get a chance to post some before I even come home.

I taken my 20D w/grip and two battery's, charger, 50mm f1.8, 85mm f1.4, and my 70-200 IS UMS f2.8 and I will be trying out the new Gary Fong light Sphere II with my 580ex
Plus I'm taking a MACBook Pro.

My wife thinks I'm taking too much, I told not I could take more. It would be nice to have a reflector to shoot when it close to the sun going down. But she talked me out of it.

So what do you think I shoud bring?

You could probably loose the 85mm since you have that range covered with the 70-200 2.8I was there a few months ago. Have a great time.

I'd leave the 85 at home as well. You'll have your 50 for low light at night and the 70-200 can cover everything else.

Plus I find having less lenses to switch between forces me to think a bit harder about composition.

When you are down there you are going to have big issues with fogging. Try not to change your lens until you have let the camera acclimate to the temperature and humidity. When I shot the wedding down there a few weeks ago I would leave my camera gear out on the balcony for a couple hours to acclimate.

As far as hurricane damage, I didn't see any, they cleaned it up really well.

Internet access, at the particular place I was at they had an internet cafe. Cost me 3 bucks for 10mins. I didn't like it but oh well.

I find the 70-200 to be too big for a vacation lens. It may also attract unwanted attention in a country where the price of that lens is a signficant amount of money (probably someone's annual income!). If it's for vacation, I'm taking an old 75-300/f4-5.6 if I really need a telephoto lens.

If I was on vacation, I'd advise leaving the grip home. The one thing you are missing is a wide angle. On vacation, i find that most pictures are taken with wide-medium focal lengths, especially on the crop factor camera.

Of course, if you're planning on doing a lot of beach observing....

Corey, you will hate going down there without a wide angle lens. Some of those beach strips are gorgeous. There is some very nice landscape photography down there if you get outside the city.
