It looks like a great place to find "gem" in the rough.

word has it (I have not gone) that unless you are looking for a specific item, this show is not a great find. I guess those that have gone can comment, but most I have heard from say they won't be going again.

A lot of old/vintage film stuff and a little modern digital. Some dealers with new lenses and bodys, but mostly the old garage sale type stuff is what I've seen there. It is interesting, but I wouldn't drive a long way to see it!

I agree with Paul here. My husband took me last year on our anniversary (what a guy!) and though it was interesting, I don’t think I would make the drive up there again. It just wasn’t quite what I was expecting. I picked up a couple of things, but I could have found these items on Ebay and saved the gas and the 5 bucks each to get in.

On the up side, everyone there was really nice

It's not the greatest show on earth. Lot's of junky equipment actually. I live in Plano and it's never really been worth it the few times I've been. eBay will do you better for that specific find.

I've gone the last two years and then wondered why I did. I collect antique cameras and have found a couple of nice folders, then last year a nice Yashica TLR. I agree with some of the other assessments. It's a small show - you can normally make a circuit of the room to scope everything out in about ten minutes. The merchandise ranges from "garage sale condition" cameras and cases to some new accessories. I saw some good bargains last year on new digital media. Some of the antique cameras are pretty pricey. Film cameras are abundent as well. As others have said, if you're close by, go. But I wouldn't spend a lot of gas and count on making a day trip of it. That said, you will be just a couple of blocks away from the big Grapevine celebration of Grapefest. Go to the show, then hit Grapefest.

Bingo. Good for a photo student needing to buy a camera for class but that's about it.

BTW, the show and Grapefest are on different weekends.

small show - 09-09-2006, 09:38 AM

I couldn't recommend this particular show. I went to the one they had at the same location this past spring and it was very small. A lot of OLD gear and mostly film. If you are into vintage equipment then it is the show for you. I was in the market for a tripod and a monopod, but there wasn't much to be had. Save your money and support your local camera shop.

I went last and it was quite interesting, although I only came away with some lens cloths. I saw a lot of overpriced film equipment, for example a Nikon F4 for $800!!! And some wanted $750 for an old Nikon D1. The only truly good bargain I saw wasn't even a camera, it was an Apple G4 700 mhz with a 17 inch apple monitor for $500 OBO. But, I'll be there again next week anyway. I'm always on the look for a great bargain.

Maybe it is a good place to go if you have stuff to sell?

What everyone says is true. However I will add that they have in the past had an abundance of backgrounds, background stands, light stands (both new and used) for fairly good prices. Most of the backgrounds are specific in use (ie. very ugly) but there are some good ones to be found if you're into digging.

While the majority of equipment is collectible, you will find a lot of MF lenses around. If you know your stuff then you can probably find a good deal somewhere in there.

I'll be going (thanks for the post!!) but whoever said this is more for people who live near Grapevine knows what he's talking about.
