Just out of curiosity, how would you go about focusing on a subject that far away and get shallow depth of field around it?

Well, f/2.8 with a telephoto lens helps. I'm not sure what the specs are on the 717, or what aperture dane was using, as the exif didn't come through...

a Canon 135mm F2 or Nikkor 135mm DC lens will do the job.....
or go the cheap way...go to photoshop and Gaussian blur the background a little...:P
