Questions concerning Deep Ellum, Please Help. - 10-30-2006, 06:53 PM

Hey guys and gals,

I was wondering whether or not anyone knows how the shooting environment down in Deep Ellum is as far as the architecture goes? By architecture I mean alot of the different backgrounds and things of that nature goes, the reason I ask is I had heard they were trying to get rid of alot of that stuff and I have a shoot that is coming up on the 12th of November and the client has shown some major interest in those type of backgrounds for this particular shoot, the client wants something she can use possibly for her CD album as well as press packets and her Website, she is a local musician that I am in the process of trying to help out.

If this is true are there any other places anyone could give me some ideas about where I might be able to do something like this?

This would be extremly HELPFUL.

Thanks,

Steve

Man it is turning into Disneyland out there, graffiti and art is damn near nill especially with the GOOD LATTIMER TUNNEL being torn down.
look at the end pics added to this album
http://www.pbase.com/demdeepellummus...attimer_tunnel
pgs 4, 5 and 6 so see the condition as of last Friday.
There are a few pieces of "art" over near the dog park that could be used as backgrounds but the area that everybody called "tagger park" next to Deep Sushi on Elm is all cleaned up with only two pieces of art work in the area and they are both about 7 ft off the ground. So images like this:
have been replaced by this:
There was even some art work on a couple buildings that the graffiti nazi's painted over that wasn't graffiti -guess the business owners were not there at the time of the assault so no one was there to stop them.

So really nothing like it was just 6 weeks ago. The grittiness has been Disneyfied by the city. Also the volumne of people attending the clubs at night has dropped off big time.

Paul,
Exactly what I was looking for and I appreciate you responding.

My question to you though would it still be possible to get shots down in that area or is it more harder because of the construction and such?

The shoot is on that Sunday early in the afternoon so I was just curios if I could still get in there?

I also know she said something about "the old Rugged Parts" and me not knowing where the "Old Rugged Parts" are located and if you could guide me in maybe that vacinity that would also help.

I have only been to Deep Ellum like once and did not get a very good chance to check it out but may try again this weekend to see what it looks like so I can let her know first hand and that will also give me a better idea of what is going on in that area.

Could you maybe give me some Directions from like NRH around NRH2O of how to get to some of these spots if you have the time?

Again very much appreciated and if you are available that Sunday maybe you would like to join me on the shoot?

I can be e-mailed @ stephengibson@charter.net or through here on PM.

Thanks again,

Steve

The construction is just at the Bridge which would not affect access to the rest of Deep Ellum.

Best way to get out there is to get onto I-30 and exit into Downtown Dallas and just go down Main Street until you go under I-45 and then you are in Ellum. When you are at Main at Good Lattimer their is some art work on odd shaped concrete pieces that is to the south and by the dog park.

As to having background scenery it is there just not as raw and gritty as before.

There are some gritty areas if you get onto the side streets at points but those vary week to week now. Heck even the old circus carnival style paintings that were on one building that was across the side entrance to the Curtain Club were removed and they had been there for maybe 10 years! (restraunt that was there closed their doors and the landlord just had the art sand blasted away though it had no direct name connection with the restraunt to speak of).

So what is her style of music? I may be able to direct you to some specific areas in DE to look at this weekend. As we get closer to the weekend let me know if your going out there and I can meet up with you to walk you around to some more interesting locations/backgrounds. (more limited than before and it doesn't mean that things won't change in a week but most of the anti-graffiti work was done at the end of the summer).

Some great areas. If you go during the middle of a work day you can shoot in the middle of the street or just about everywhere.

Here are a few examples of one of my shoots there.

The first photo that dp posted has been "de-graffitied" the other two locations exist. There are all sorts of differing backgrounds throughout Deep Ellum, just most of the grittier style are now sadly gone. I used to love to go to "taggers park-the first shot above" to just see what had been painted in the past week, some of the work was very elaborate and detailed not just some poor work and it was set back off the road but the city got onto this binge of "Disneylandification" and has killed it off. What is sad is that some people went to Deep Ellum because it wasn't squeeky clean looking and had some edge too it. I've been on various local musicians boards and there have been major discussions about the Hip Hop/Dance Club movement into Ellum and how it has killed it with increased violent crime. Just see the current fight between "Club Blue vs the City of Dallas" though Club Blue is not in Ellum but downtown.

BTW I-30 is going to be closed down between basically Downtown Dallas and Loop 12 all weekend so I would come in on 183 to Stemmons and then into Downtown.

Well I met up with Stephen and we spent almost 2 hours walking Deep Ellum and Exposition Park. We came across some art off the beaten path and then there is a lot over by the Dog Park on these concrete slabs that the city put up.

Well I shot most of the scenes to document it and give others an idea about what is out there as potential backgrounds. You can go to this album and see what I shot today-pg 2 and on
http://www.pbase.com/demdeepellummus...s_shots&page=2
There also will be some Exposition Park shots towards the end which is just east of Deep Ellum right by Fair Park.

Here is a gallery of images I shot about a month ago...

http://www.solomodels.com/gallery/in...9c336651c94096

Pretty much all in the Elm, Main St area of Deep Ellum. Shot on a Sunday around 10am... I personally think it's best to get out there early as possible to avoid harsh lighting.. 10am (prior to time change) was not ideal.
