Dogwood Canyon? Cedar Hill - 11-04-2006, 09:47 PM

anyone know where the picture in this article was taken?

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcont...2.90c7033.html

It's called Dogwood Canyon near Cedar Hill State Park. I've been all around this area and haven't seen this rock outcrop anywhere, at least not on any normal trail.
It mentions the Cedar Mountain Preserve which is supposedly soon to be part of Cedar Hill State Park. I've been to the little parking lot where CMP is and walked the trails there and been all over CHSP. My best guess is that this shot was taken across from CMP and CHSP on the other side of FM 1382. There are what looks to be some rock outcrops on the side of the hill but I don't know of any trails there.

anyone have any ideas?

I may have to just e-mail the reporter.....

Well since they say in the article that the visitors center will be on FM 1382 I would assume the rest would be right behind it.

I thought the closest Dogwoods to the area were in east Texas about 100 miles away, thought the soil was all wrong here for them along with the rain levels being too dry. May just be worth going down that way in the Spring to try to find these flowering beauties.

So now we have the Texas Buckeye and Palm Trees, in the Great Trinity Forest, and now Dogwoods in the southern part of the county along with alligators and other critters.

Yes, Dogwood Canyon is part of the Cedar Mountain Preserve and is located off FM 1382, one-mile south of Cedar Hill State Park. (For others that are unfamiliar with the area, park at N32 36.891 W096 58.250. The trailhead is a ways up the road and starts at N32 37.004 W096 58.431.)

I hike this area several times a week. you would have to know where the trail head was to find it.

anndd...........? Does that mean you know where that shot was taken? or your're just saying where the Cedar Mountain preserve trail head is? I've been on that trail a couple times too, just never saw this rock thing.

Or is it a secret........ ?

Are there more trails across the street from the parking at CMP (north side of 1382)

thanks

Yes I know where the outcropping is and I have been there many times but I can't give you directions. Not because it is a secret but it would be hard to explain and you most likely would be lost. I have been all over this area by foot for the last 28 years and I know it very well.

BTW there is an east and weat side of 1382 not north and south. There are trails on both sides of 1382. The east side is the Mountain Creek Preserve, which is sponsored by the Audobon Society, and the west side which is Cedar Hill State Park and The Dogwood Canyon area, which is beyond the trails accessable from 1382 you are referring to. I believe those trails, that have a parking lot, are maintained by the City of Cedar Hill.

If you follow the trail down from the parking lot there is a hidden trail that almost goes straight up to the back of Dogwood Canyon. It may be hard to find if you not familiar with the area and there isn't any landmarks I can give you to find it.

Dogwood Canyon can also be access from Beltline Road behind the 9th Grade school north of downtown Cedar Hill. You have to be careful because some of these areas are posted No Trepassing and they are strictly enforced.

AH ha, thanks, that makes sense. In the article it mentioned the Cedar Hill ninth grade school but I wasn't familiar with that part of the area. Now I have my bearings.

I've ridden the mountain bike trails at CHSP as well as hiked around the other two little trails for the past 15 years or so, since whenever the park was opened. Even saw a deer out there about 10-12 years ago.

But I haven't been in the Cedar Mountain\Dogwood Canyon area but a couple times so when I saw the picture in that article I was really curious where it was.

thanks again
