I was downtown last Sunday and decided to try out a 500mm mirrored F8 nikon lens that I hardly ever use. This was taken using a tree trunk to stabalize the shot. I was standing between the Parking lot of the Cattle Drive Sculpture by the convention center and City Hall in the parkway. Otherwise this was hand held.
(yeah I need to clean the sensor). | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

The first time I saw that was 1959. Then, it was the crown of the city! It was taller than anything else in downtown Dallas!

Isn't this a new one? Or did they refurb the original?

I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by,
and then it petered out and I had to retrace my steps and wasted half a day.

The refurbed the old one, actually I think they replaced the metal completely by taking the old one down in pieces and using it as a template then of course the neon was all history on the old one. They also replaced the motors that turn them.
After they did this, one of the old sides was actually in that inclosed shops building at the Farmers Market for a while-THOSE THINGS ARE BIG!

I think perhaps the building the Pegasus Sign tops used to house some Mobile Oil offices. The Pegasus sign has always been associated with the Mobil Oil Company as their signature, and prior to that Mobile was known as Magnolia Oil.
Thus the sign on the Magnolia Building.
I think Sinclair was a Dinosaur????

Sinclair had a Dinasour- I know still a few years ago some Sinclair stations up around Wyoming area still had about 5 ft tall concrete dinasours at some of their outlets that dated back to the 1950's or before.
Pegasus was a symbol for Mobil Sucony Oil Company known as mobil sucony-vacuum oil http://www2.exxonmobil.com/Corporate..._H_Pegasus.asp http://www.signindustry.com/neon/art...LCpegasus.php3

OK you had Magnolia Oil Company, Sucony (Standard Oil of NY) Oil and Vacuum Oil Company back at one time. Magnolia was based in Dallas and you had Sucony and Vacuum joining together in NY. The Sucony and Vacuum group has Pegasus as their symbol . Well in the mean time Magnolia was getting big down here in Texas with all of the oil fields so they built their headquarters in Dallas in the 1920's. So in the early 30's Sucony-Vacuum buys out Magnolia completely and then the Oil Industry decided to hold their national convention in Dallas in 1934 and they wanted to make a statement so they built the sign and put it on their roof since they moved their operations to Dallas. The name Mobil was adopted in the 1950's as the new world wide marketing name for the company. Then of course we know Mobil was bought out by Exxon and the world headquarters is in Irving but Mobil still has an office tower up Stemmons from the old building.

It was Magnolia Oil. They were a big sponser of the Texas Centenial (I have been told as I am not that old) and Sinclair did use the dinosaur. Others were Humble, which became Enco, then Esso, then whatever it is now. Remember Fina with Phlash! They were going to convert all the stations to give pink air. Gas was also 18 cents a gallon, but I also made 50 cents an hour dipping ice cream at Ashburns.
