Say a TPF day for the DFW crowd and others in mid January (6th?) To visit the art museums in Ft Worth?

There is the Carter which has an extensive photographic Collection
The Kimball- if you want to see how the Old Masters used light as a style-photographers should always learn as much about using light as possible
The Modern
The Cowgirl
All of these museums are together.
If we waited until the 13th we run into the Stock Show and Rodeo which could be good too but the parking is harder to do but then that would make it a bigger photo op in one area.

I would be up for something if my schedule allows.
I agree that the stock show makes life difficult in the museum area. Cameras are not generally allowed in the museums.
I would like a get together at the museums before the stock show starts.(lunch at the modern is terrific ).
I would like a get together at the stock show ( thousands of photo ops ). Corny dogs and fries for all.

Tom your wrong about the camera in the museum thing. NO FLASH but I have had my cameras several times into both the Carter and the Kimball to shoot their permenant collection and in the old Modern Art location. Like most better musuems, aka europe and else where across the US, they allow cameras pretty much except in special touring shows.

http://www.kimbellart.org/information/info.cfm?id=54

Backpacks, umbrellas, or other bulky items are not allowed in the galleries. Free parcel check is available.

No flash photography or tripods. No photography in special exhibitions.

Unless prohibited during a special exhibition, visitors are allowed to sketch on sketchpads, in pencil, as long as it does not obstruct or interfere with other visitors.

http://www.cartermuseum.org/visiting
Things to Know When Visiting the Carter
All bags and purses brought into the museum are subject to search.
All backpacks and bags are subject to search. Bags 11-by-15 inches or larger must be checked; lockers are available in the coat-check area.
Still photography in existing light in the permanent collection galleries is permitted for personal, non-commercial use. A photography permit is available at the information desk. Tripods, flash, and movie and video cameras are prohibited.

http://www.themodern.org/visit.html
Could not find a policy stated but like I said I shot in the old facility

http://www.cowgirl.net/generalinfo.asp
Photography
Photography is permitted in the Lobby, Connie Reeves Discovery Corral & Gift Shop only
(so basically no photos in the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame).
http://www.sidrichardsonmuseum.org/n...eum/highlights
No stated policy on the website but I have shot in there also-light is kind of low-no flash allowed.
http://www.texascowboyhalloffame.com/visitors.asp
No written policy but I would assume photography is allowed and they may allow flash.

I would love to meet up for the museum tour. They're practically in my back yard and I haven't been inside them in years. Keep me posted.

I found a copy of the Visitors guide for the Modern and nothing is mentioned about photography in the museum.

They also have increased their holdings in the photographic area concentrating on works from 1960- 2006.

I'd go if we weren't there every week for my son's "Museum School". LOL

BTW: For those that didn't know about it, the Museum School is very educational and my 5 yr son has gotten a LOT out of it over the last couple years. Great program and I highly recommend it.

OK this day works even better since the Next Sunday 1-14-07 is the start of the PPA convention in San Antonio!!! http://imagingusa.org/expo.htm So people can talk about what is coming up too!
BTW for the locals any good place that people can grab some food at nearby after we leave the Museums? I know Joe T's is great for medium to large groups.

Fort Worth Museum of Science and History.

Ages, 3, 4 and 5... they'll take 6 if close

Standard School year...I think Sept - May... 2hrs once per week.

Cost is between $500-$600.

So it looks like that this will be a go. I would think that we would start at the Carter first in their Photography section (if anyone has contacts with the Museum maybe they can get us a docents tour?) then head down to the Kimball to study how the masters used light in their paintings and if we have time head to the Modern last.

The Kimbell and Carter are free (except for touring shows but you can still get into the musuem for free to see their permenent collection) the Modern has a fee. You can get more information about each Museum in the links posted above.

I have used my camera in the new Modern many times. There is no permit requirement and a person is allowed to photograph any of the art that the museum owns. No photography of the rotating exhibits is allowed. Additionally, the architecture of the museum itself offers some great photographic opportunities. For those who might have vacation/free time during the week, the Modern is free on Wednesdays.

there is a Mexican place on University right near the Museum District called Dos Gringos. Food is okay and it is literally across the street from the District...
