Fox 4 had a story about a ring on Garland Road 10000 block area that has Mexican Wrestling matches on most Sunday nights at 7 pm TIME CORRECTION from 5-7 PM and there sometimes are warm ups before the match start times (12-13-06)- in the Texas Adventures section (I am having problems on getting their website to comeup). This is low budget wrestling with Masks and Tights at it's best! The ring is put together with spit n hope and blood and tears, the area around it seats 100 at most (per the video shown) the wrestlers both semi pro and total just walk into the ring have their hearts into it. Sounded like the cost to get in is pretty low (under $10 a ticket I would assume) and the guys in the ring get to split the money pretty much.
Some of the guys shown for the night that they were there were in full Nacho Libre style outfits and some of the guys go all out to win their matches.
This could be a great photo op or even one that would be good for an ongoing series. Could even be a PJ story with follow ups on the wrestlers and their daily lives and homes and if a person was real ambitious getting into the history of this style of theatric wrestling that was pretty much started in the 1930's.

A friend of mine has brought in some wrestling pictures from a similar operation with anglo wrestlers. I'll have to check where it was. I used to see some wrestling matches on TV that were obviously filmed in a small facility, not more than 100 or 200 in the audience. But it's been a while since I've seen that.

Well the PCW ring in Arlington has their Uncut Friday nights for $5 general admission, kids under 10 free! http://www.pcwwrestling.com/multimedia.htm
Looking on the site it looks like they may have a couple house photographers but they don't shoot that often and I bet they almost never shoot the Friday bouts but if anyone wants to e-mail call them if they would have any problems of being swarmed with photographers on a Friday night they can. Really looking at the site they have no problems of the fans taking pics-they have a fan contribution area. ALSO FLASH IS ALLOWED!
Location is kind of central to the DFW metroplex
The Gym/ PCW Arena
Six Flags Mall
2922 Galleria Drive
Arlington, Texas 76011
So maybe set up a Friday Night Wretling shoot in late Jan and maybe even see if we can resolve some of those message board battles mono on mono?
I may try to check out the Libre thing next Sunday-still can't get the FOX site to load for me to get more concise info to post here about it.

I've went to the PCW events twice and they have no problems with still photography, just no video. It's $5 on Fridays and $10 on Saturdays. If you go on Friday you can sit very close, there are not many people in the crowd that night. I tried with my flash and 70-200 2.8 and with no flash using an 85 1.8 and the pics without flash looked much better. These pics have no noise software applied so if you have anything newer or use noise ninja/neat image you will get much better pics. The first two are from my 1D with 85 1.8 and th 2nd two are from my 300D/Rebel with a 70-200 2.8 using the onboard flash. This is the week I bought the 1D so there was some trial and error involved. I have since purchased noise ninja and these look much better with it.
There are more posted at http://www.thegym.org/fanpics/indexfanpics.htm It was fun and I would love to check out the Mexican wrestling.

Click on the SWF logo for the wrestling info.

OK I went by the location of the wrestling matches, though nobody was in the room tonight training, and saw the room. It is BARE MINIMUM florescent lighting-DEFENITE FLASH SITUATION! If some one has a portable set of studio lights they may be worth bringing out do some portrait shots of the wrestlers before the matches.
Matches are Sundays from 5 pm till 7 pm and they train on some Saturday Afternoons.
Right now this Sunday looks open on my Schedule and I will be going out there.
There are NO Bleachers just random folding and kitchen type chairs along the wall-room probably could seat 50-60 and another 50 standing. Ring mat is about 3 ft above the floor level So if I were short or wanted to get some elevation and say I had a 3-4 ft folding step ladder I would bring it.
The cost is basically donations! I would say that if we go something around $5 into the hat and maybe a couple free prints to the wrestlers.

I used to watch this stuff on channel 11 when I was a kid and I believed it all! 6 months ago I didn't know there was any wrestling left outside of what's on tv. Now I find 3 organizations in DFW with regular weekend wrestling. Funny and strange.
I also don't have anything this Sunday and I've got a couple of cheap ebay 120ws strobes and a battery powered 4x6 printer I can bring out.

Ok made it out to MAW-Mexican-American Wrestling with Shawn and I had a hell of a lot of fun. I arrived at about 4:30 Shawn was already there and we proceeded to set up 6 lights around the outside of the ring with the lights at about head level of the wrestlers. The lighting in there is NILL so you have to have some sort of lights. Well I was in a state of sleep deprevation and not thinking as strait as I could have but we got the set up working with both a wireless trigger and a light trigger so that if we set off one light all of them would go off with the triggers. With two guys shooting at once sometimes one of us would set off the lights and then the second guy would be a part of a second later and would end up with an underlit shot so we started to rotate as to who shot when. I would shoot a few minutes and then let Shawn shoot a few until a third guy came in and started setting off our lights. :( The guys were real cool and even playing up to us at times. I had one flash unit knocked down twice but it survived and kept working. (I will have a wireless set up when I make it again after the PPA so that up to 3 people can work with the systems at one time and it has a fast recycle time).
There next match is not until the first Sunday in January, there was a door fee of TWO Dollars which they waved for us since we are donating some of the pics to the wrestlers and I am going to make up at least one if not more pics into poster sizes for the walls of the place.
This was fun as hell-one guy reminded me of Curly of the 3 Stooges.
