Pelicans at White Rock Lake - 12-15-2006, 11:31 PM

When I was driving over in the fog to the Arboreteum this morning I spotted a group of Pelicans floating near East Lawther and Garland Road in the lake. Well an hour or so later I am near the edge of the park and see an older gentleman walking his dog at the lake and I ask him if he had seen any pelicans this morning (fog had lifted) and he said that there are several back at Pelican Bay. I had a stupid moment never associating the bays name with the birds actually being at the lake. So off at sunrise for me to see if I can shoot some Pelicans on the east side of the lake!

We used to see them up in Colorado quite a bit in a little lake. They summer up there, and winter down here (maybe not the same ones). But I've seen 'em out on that Rowlett Nature Trail, up at Lake Texoma and a few other places around- not that uncommon if you're out by the water much.

I grew up on the coast, and don't ever remember seeing brown pelicans. Now, they're pretty common down there.

I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by,
and then it petered out and I had to retrace my steps and wasted half a day.
