Just curious if it would be worth it to venture to Ft Worth to check out some animals and bring the gear along.

Absolutely ...
Some of the animals are not as active, and some are more active than usual.
You will not run into the big summer crowds, and you get a feeling that you have the whole place to yourself.
Most of the food concessions are closed for the winter, but they are overpriced anyways.
Lots of places to go inside if it is cold.

Hrm... I'll have to check out the site. Everytime I go to the botanical gardens I see the sign for the zoo and keep thinking about turning that way but never do. All the years I've lived in Dallas I never gone to the Ft Worth Zoo...some day... some day. Maybe spring time when the animals are going crazy for each other.

Went to the Fort Worth Zoo yesterday afternoon, 01/01/07, with my son for our first photo safari. We both had a good time shooting pictures.

The lions were acting like kittens pouncing all over each other. Interesting interactions between the jaguar and the coyotes in adjacent cages in the Texas wildlife section, see photo sample below. Lots of interesting photo opportunities, six examples of the kind of photo opportunities that we shot, many others as well. These are simply cropped and reduced for web posting, no post camera work time yet.

Parking was $5, admission for adults was $10.50.

All of these pictures except the lizard were shot with a Canon Rebel XT and Tamron 75-300 4-5.6 lens, the lizard was shot with a Tamron 17-50 2.8.

I went on 12-27-06, the clouds were in and out, but the animals were pretty active. Here in one of my captures from that day.

Had my 70-200 4L with Canon 20D

If nothing else, you'll get a lot of the people out of the way. I went to the Dallas zoo on a weekday a few weeks ago- ideal photography time for the animals.

I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by,
and then it petered out and I had to retrace my steps and wasted half a day.

Nice shot of the white tiger Chris. He stayed mainly down on the lower levels while I was there.

That's the other thing I was going to ask. Dallas VS Ft Worth Zoo...which one, why? I have read reviews of the Ft Worth Zoo so I'm leaning towards that but maybe Dallas has something to offer too. When is the ideal time to go to get the best shots of the animals?

FW Zoo is much niceer, and it's also more photo-friendly (more open exhibits as opposed to being closed in with wire or dirty plexi).

Excellent... Thanks Jeff! I shall go venture to the Ft. Worth Zoo as soon as the weather warms up a tad. I read on the website that any photo taken is automatically property of the Zoo's....pretty interesting. I wonder what the legalities of that are...I'm going to contemplate what they wrote on the site and then maybe callt hem up and ask them.

??? Where did you see that - this is all I found on their site:

Visitor agrees not to commercially use any photography or reproduction in any form taken during any visits to the Fort Worth Zoo, and visitor grants permission to the Fort Worth Zoo and its agent to utilize Visitor's image, likeness and/or sound recordings for the purpose whatsoever in perpetuity.

I don't see such a claim on their website, and even if it was there that wouldn't make it legitimate. What they do say is that they can take photographs/video of visitor and use them as they please (though again, unless there's something on the ticket you purchase to gain entrance I have to think such a claim would be completely unenforceable, especially if it's just posted on a website that many zoo visitors would never even see).
