Not this time but the time before the eye doctor gave me the wrong perscription for my eyes...I have no idea how. I'm just wondering where you guys get your eyes checked. If you're wondering why I haven't gotten lasik cause I don't have the money and I rather have corrective lenses/contacts for now. So I'm just wondering where you get your eyes checked and what insurance they accept. I would like someone dependable and insightful. Also someone who doesn't run misc random tests that are very pointless... | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

Greg Coronado at Perspective Eyecare in Allen is a good doctor, but more inportantly, a good person so you don't have to worry about "pointless tests"! He was so honest that he told me to get LASIK (which he does NOT provide). He lost a customer as I got LASIK 6 years ago, but gained a referral source for his honesty.
Tell him Shane sent you . . .

I use:
Patrick T. Sweeney, MD
Sweeney Eye Associates
120 W. Main Street, Suite 211
Mesquite, TX 75149
972-285-8966 www.SweeneyEye.com
Takes a while to get an appointment since he's always booked but very thorough and is always willing to take the time to talk to you about what's wrong or not wrong with your eyes. No sales pressure for this or that either even though he is apparently full service, ie: diseases of the eye, Lasik, diabetes problems, cataracts, etc... Note also that he is an MD, not just another quick stop for eyeglasses and contacts.
I have my eyeglasses done at Lenscrafters at Town East Mall just because I've had good luck there. Last time I went in for new specs, the fellow told me that the Rx was for all intents and purposes, identical to my last Rx for glasses and "in good conscience", he didn't want to sell me another pair if I didn't need them. Once I explained that my current lenses were quite scratched up and needed replacing anyway, he went ahead and did the deal. Needless to say, I appreciated his honesty. | | | |

I spent 9 years selling glasses and contacts, so I can kinda tell you what you should be looking for. As far as optometrist vs opthamologist... opthamologists are medical doctors specializing in diseases of the eyes. Going to them for eye related diseases or injuries are great. As far as prescriptions go though, they're not always as accurate as their non-MD counterparts. Keep in mind that they don't do nearly as much refraction as an optometrist. A good optometrist will more than suffice for getting you a good solid prescription.
Here's what you need to know about how to get the best out of an optometrist:
1. Go to an optometrist that is connected to a major chain. Typically Lenscrafters, EyeMasters, and WalMart (yes, even Wally World) have good solid optometrists. The most common practice is to walk right next door to the store to buy glasses, so they're pretty picky about their doctors.
2. If at all possible, make an appointment to go in early on a weekday. If you go in on a Saturday afternoon and the office is busy, they may be more likely to rush through the exam.
3. Make sure that you're comfortable with the amount of time that the dr takes to do your exam. If you feel like he's rushing you, tell him.
4. Before the dr actually sits you down and starts the exam, their assistant usually will do an autorefraction, which is basically a computer taking measurments of your eye, determining the presence of astigmatism. That is NOT your exam. If the dr doesn't sit down, flip a bunch of lenses and rings, and ask you repeatedly "which looks better? 1 or 2?", then you need to see someone else.

Just a couple of thoughts- on getting the right prescription, I've had trouble with that as well, but part of the problem is the eyes, not the doctor. What looked sharp last week doesn't this week, and that's hard to work around. The pointless tests may not be so pointless- if they detect glaucoma or retinal detachment or something like that. Don't assume that someone who does no pointless tests is doing you a favor.

I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by,
and then it petered out and I had to retrace my steps and wasted half a day.

Dr. David Callanan at Texas Retina Associates. Awesome doc, awesome practice. He's very well thought of where I work (Alcon Laboratories, Inc. - and Ophthalmic pharmaceutical and surgical equip company).

D. | Wow! That's amazing. I'm really apprehensive about having Lasik. If I'm the 1-in-a-million screwup, I only have one set of eyes. If an optician screws up 10 pairs of glasses, well, they can just remake more sets until they get them right.
But I use Dr. Craig Bolton on North Central Expressway in Dallas, just North of Walnut Lane.
