Never shoot a Wedding for free, even if it is your first, you will be locked in that for a while and everyone from there will expect the same or very low budget.

I totally agree with this, after having been there.
Some other food for thought.........
If you haven't done a wedding yet:
**How do you know that's what you want to do?
**How do you know you'll do a good job for the client that hires you?
**What guarantees will you be able to give your clients that their only memories from their wedding day won't be lost or ruined?
**What will you do if the client is unhappy with your work due to lack of experience?
**Are you insured, in case your gear gets damaged or stolen, or if the couple decides to sue you?
There's a thousand more questions I could post that you may not have thought of.
Not trying to single you out in any way, Kevin. I haven't seen any of your work, and I don't know what your skill level is. So take all this with a gain of salt.
I've fought this battle. I'm just getting to the point where I'm comfortable with the responsibility of being hired for a job where there are NO DO OVERS.
Find a wedding photographer that will let you tag along as a second shooter, that will let you use the images you shot for your portfolio. (These DO exist! I've worked with several over the last couple of years, and am STILL working with one.) Then you can show those images to show prospective clients, and the work experience is absolutely priceless.
My $.02.
