Finding a new CRT monitor? - 02-07-2007, 10:57 AM

Does anyone know where you can find 21" CRT monitors in/near the metroplex? They seem to be a dying breed. Anyone been to First Saturday recently to see if they still sell them out there?

My current CRT I am using for editing is showing signs of dying soon, so I am looking to replace it. My budget is in the $300-$400 range, so I can't really afford some of the nicer LCD monitors that are good for editing. Although, I am open to suggestions if someone has experience with an LCD in that price range that they like and can be calibrated.

You could find a used Sony 24" widescreen CRT for about that price. That monitor looks pretty sweet(I've never actually used it).

Wow, I didn't know they made CRTs with the wider aspect ratio. Very cool.

I got a 19" Trinitron mail-ordered from a repair/refurb place in CA a couple of years ago. It was (and is) in great shape, like new, and only cost me about $75 total. I'll try to find the info - not sure how important it is for you to find local.

Refurb is about all your going to see anymore. They no longer manufacture CRT's as of last March (2006). Everything is headed to LCD.

www.newegg.com has several 22" LCD's for even under $300. It will save you a lot of backache and stress on your desk in the long run. I was so glad to get rid of my 21" CRT a couple of years ago. That thing weighed about 70lbs.

Try Ebay, and do "local" so that you have no shipping, and can see before you buy.

Samsung makes a 21" LCD that is very reliable and is able to be fully calibrated.

Thanks for all the respones! I knew that CRT's were getting hard to find, but I was hoping maybe someone knew of a secret stash in some specialty computer store around here and I could save the high shipping costs. I didn't realize that they may not be manufacturing new ones that large anymore.

I will start checking out my options in LCD monitors as well.

Sad thing is, after I got my LCD and later moved I just put my 21" CRT out on the curb. It still worked fine, it just wasn't worth the hassle of lugging it from place to place and it took up too much valuable space. I think I had paid about $125 for it at the 1st Saturday sale and it gave me a good couple of years of service...it was just its time to go.

Torrey! On the curb? Ever heard of Craigslist?!? BTW, my wife says your turtle avatar is cool. :)

I found the info on my monitor. I mis-remembered; paid $155 for it including shipping. Here's what I got:
http://www.accurateit.com/details.asp?iid=37#

Looks like you can get 21" for under $100 now, including flat Trinitrons.

I didn't know about craigslist back then and only decided to ditch it when I was getting ready to move and started thinking about carrying it up 2 flights of stairs to the apartment, and then another floor up to my room. It had a good picture, but the case wasn't very pretty at all...hence the $125 price tag.

Thanks for the compliment on the avatar...too bad it doesn't look much better as a bigger picture, hehe.

Sarah, I did an Ebay search within 200 miles of Dallas and turned up 72. Over half of those were in Dallas. Ther ewas also a refurb guy had a 21 for about $85.00 I used 21 CRT to do the search.
