Who is a member of the Ft Worth Zoo? - 02-12-2007, 09:54 PM

I'm considering joining cause the more I get adapted to my lenses and camera, the more I'll want to go and shoot. I think the 50 bucks could be worth it...I remember going once but that was ages ago. Think I was in 2nd grade or something and remember seeing a peacock but that's it.

I'm a member and I think it's worth it.
They have a few cool "members only" things also.
I can't tell you what they are until you know the secret handshake.......

Mine expired in November, but next time I go I will get a new one.
No charge parking, and waltz right past the sometimes long lines at the ticket window.
Incentive enough if you go just 3 or 4 times a year.

I've been up there...although fairly small, it is in an interesting neighborhood with a park across the street. I think I prefer Cheyenee Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs over Denver Zoo. They're both good I guess.

The zoo is a good place to hone your wildlife shooting skills. The conditions, shadows, and low light, mimic environments you encounter in the field.

It lets you learn how to effectively use your equipment and learn what settings to use for various conditions. It also will give you a chance to hone your fill flash skills which are instrumental in shooting wildlife in their environment.

I find it a great place to test new equipment so I can see how it will render the best fur or feather detail. If it doesn't work there it won't work in the field.

I've only been to the FW Zoo once, but it is a really nice place and very photographer friendly from what I saw. We're members in Dallas just because it's at least 30 minutes closer for us in Plano.

In any case, I strongly support membership in your local zoo. The education they provide children and adults in the area is well worth the few dollars a year for a basic membership. IMHO of course.

I had been a long time member, let it lapse as my sons grew up, but joined again two years ago as my DSLR hobby grew. I really enjoy it, but still wish I could go more frequently. The perks of not paying parking and bypassing the ticket lines are worth it, but don't go on Wednesdays in the spring. It's half price day and all the school trips go on that day.

Rusty, have you been on one of the photo safaris? I have not, but I'm going to try to go on the March and April ones. March features rhinos and April giraffes.

Not yet. Sounds interesting though. I might show up at the March Safari if the kids don't have an early soccer game that morning. It would be interesting to hear a review from someone who has been.
