southlake/westlake building - 02-14-2007, 09:40 PM

I'm looking for one specifically.. It's that building with all the crazy colors off of 114 in between Southlake and Westlake.. You really can't miss it, there are these two huge crazy colored pillars.. Anyone know the name of this building? Anyone know of any rules of shooting there?

And while I'm here, any other suggestions for places to shoot in Southlake?

I've shot around there a few Sunday afternoons, and never had anyone approach me. I was by myself, not using if for a protrait backdrop or anything, if that helps. I was on the south side of 114 in the public area where the hotel and restaurants are, have not tried the other side which I think is strictly business offices.

As for other places to shoot in Southlake, as usual it depends on what you are looking for. The new Nature Center is nice, but not very photogentic IMHO. There's always Town Center, the fountains and the City Hall present a few nice views. I like City Hall and the Gazebo there for night shots. Not much else I can think of in Southlake. I posted a couple of things from Westlake and Trophy Club yesterday and today, but you have to go out and dig (pun) to find anything.

I live close to here and shoot there all the time. It is Solana. I have had security pull up and ask me what I was doing and I just told them I was taking pictures and they left me alone. I don't think they will give you to much trouble. If you exit off of 114 and turn towards the colored pillars (left or right) depending on your ext then, take your first left and park in the parking lot on your right. Get out and go towards the resteraunts. You will see a water fall and then past that there are some cool pots lined up in a big square one right after another that are good to take pics of. Its a great place to take pics.

Do you have anything specific you are going to shoot or just going for the location???

The Westlake campus (on the west and south side of 114) is dominated by an insurance company now. When I tried to shoot dragonflys along a creek on the east side of the parking garage last June, I was told by security that the new tenants did not allow photography on the campus and that I would have to leave.

When I tried to ask for clarification, because I had shot there extensively in the past and had shared photos with security team when my employer was located on the campus, they went on to further specify that the main grounds behind the buildings (to the North) were off limits as well. And then added a follow up statement that although wedding and engagement photos had been taken there in the past, they were no longer allowed.

There are two other main areas on the site, the part where the restaurants and hotel is located, and the part on the east side of 114. I think the part on the east side of 114 has controlled access to it now. You might try where the hotel and the restaurants are located.

I haven't tried to investigate if the trails along the property are private or public.

If you could get permission, I would think that a shot of your bride wandering around and looking at those big pots that were mentioned would make a very interesting pose. Maybe "plant" her colorful bouquet in one of the pots, as if she were trying to find it???? you might need to shoot from a ladder to get over the pots in the foreground.

just an idea.

I think its ridiculous if they have stopped pictures from being taken. I don't see why it would hurt to let people photograph there. It is a very interesting place.

I hope you get to take your pictures there. I am a little rebellious. If it were me I would just start taking and act like you did not know any better. Sometimes security is not around. Especially on the weekends. I know you can't do that with paying customers but, the rebellious side of me wants you to! Good luck.

Hey Stacy,

I have always asked the hotel if it was ok that I shoot as it tends to be pretty busy inside of it as a lot of airlines have their crews stay there. As for the outside of it, you shouldn't have many problems.

Kevin, do they require any kind of reservation fee or requirements to shoot inside the hotel? I know some places will only let you shoot if the couple is having their wedding there.
