Good place for sensor cleaning? - 02-28-2007, 03:39 PM

Hi I was wondering where people get their camera sensors cleaned... I called wolfe and they said they'd need it for two weeks, called lighttec and they referred me to a guy that wanted about $200. Thanks

I took mine to Fort Worth Camera once and they seem to have done a good job. Took them 3 days and cost $75.

Learn to do it yourself, supplies cost around $50 and will give you several cleanings.

Archinal will actually show you how to do it so if you want to be shown the first time use him.

Theres a good, reliable camera repair shop on richmond. I think it's called camera repair it's at I believe 4410 richamond up the street from the rajun cajun on the right hand side of the street headed west. took both my d10 and 20 in 70.00 a piece for the cleaning but great work and well worth the money.

Crop Lines will have a vendor booth at the TPPA Convention this weekend at the Arlington Convention Center. He can add 8X10 crop lines to your focus screen and he also cleans sensors. If you get there early he will clean it while you wait. Later you might have to leave it overnight. Prices are very reasonable.

EDIT: My mistake, CropLines is not on the TPPA vendor list this year.

I'll try ft worth camera. I tried Archinal and he's the guy that wanted to charge me around $200 total for it all; he said the materials would cost around $60 then toclean it himself it was like 120 or so.

Robert over at Archinal will give you a CLASS 45 mins and teach you how to do it yourself. I think the class is like 75 or 80 bucks. that way you dont have to keep paying people to do it for ya! hehe I need to take his class. Heck I need to go see him! hehehe

About how often does the sensor need cleaning would you say? Probably depends I guess, but what are typical averages, every month, three months, longer?

There is no reason for anything to get on the sensor, unless you remove the lens. Depending on how often and where you change lenses this could be anywhere from every day to once every couple of years to never. I have two bodies that I bought a couple of years ago and I had both of them cleaned when I had CropLines added last spring. My third body is a year old and has never been cleaned. My work is mostly studio, location, and weddings and with three bodies, I don't have to change lenses very often. YMMV

If you are on location say out in the dessert and change lenses often, outside of a changing bag, you may need to clean the sensor every couple days while as DON says if you have a better body that is well weather sealed then you may not need to clean the sensor for years if you don't change lenses on it often.

Really the true test is to shoot a clear blue sky midday and then review the pics for dust and specs. To be honest cleaning a sensor isn't clean room rocket science and can be done by most people with some patience and willing to do it more than once. Best advice is to learn how to do it properly then when you clean it go out take some test shots and if it isn't acceptable do it again and if necessary do it a third time. One bit of advice though is to do it in a room with no airblowing around, try to have the air deadcalm so you don't introduce more dust to the sensor. Also when changing lenses on the camera have the camera body exposed for as short of a time as possible and have your back to the wind, if the dust level is high in the air either go into a building or car or use a changing bag (changing bag is what film guys will use at times).

The other issue I'm facing is that most places want to keep my cam for 5 days + :( It's my only one, can't do without it that long. Rats.
