Need photo location and other stuff - 04-01-2007, 02:17 PM

I've got a senior photo shoot coming up and I need some advice...

First of all, this girl that I'll be shooting is.... well, let's say that she's less than feminine. I'll be going for something kind of edgy with her. She wears a lot of black and is very tomboy-ish. Plus, she's big into playing softball. Need suggestions for how to shoot here, and I'd love to know of any locations around here that might work. I'm not looking for a "Botanical Park" type of thing. Make sense?

Try Legacy Paark, and take a Bat and shoot her in a batters stance, also, have her climb a tree?

Also try the Stockyards and use the old slaughter houses as a background.

A lot of the area city's now have an athletic complex as part of the park system. Find a nice City owned Softball field to use as a backdrop.

I like the urban edge approach.... try starting mid-to late-afternoon downtown Fort Worth, finish up after dark.... lots of gritty places without being unsafe... Dallas is cool too but not as safe in the back alleys.

Parking garages are ok too.... and usually good if you want a skyline background.

Take her to a Biker bar?

How bout the Allen Skate Park? have a bunch of guys in the back skating while she's in the foreground...I guess that would take away from the subject...hrm...

Here's my novice advice: Take her to a baseball diamond, have her pose with the bat (like she's swinging), and shoot from different angles. Have a step ladder handy to shoot from for a different perspective. I'm still learning too... :-)

In Downtown Ft. Worth near Sundance Square, Behind the stores that front Main Street, there's an alley that's done up in kind of a cafe style look. Lots of red brick, kinda edgy feel to it but it could be made really edgy in post. Take a walk around Downtown Ft. Worth and look around. There's a lot of little alley entries and niches and places that can give you an edgy feel. Stockyards can be really cool and don't have to have a cowboy feel to it. On White Settlement Rd., just west of DT Ft. Worth is a huge cemetery with lots of really nice statuary, mausoleums and stuff if she's feeling that edgy. Also, at the Ft. Worth Botanic Gardens (hear me out) and the very south end of the gardens there's a natural area that has some water features, an old hollow tree that's big enough to actually step into plus lot's of other natural looking outdoors features that does not have a rose garden feel to it. Hope that helps.

Thanks for all of the great suggestions. I definitely need to work in her involvement with softball, but I don't want it to look like a sports shot, either. I need to do some research. I also need to go walk around Fort Worth and the Stockyards a bit.

Wes, you could also do something in-studio with a colored backdrop and some creative lighting. I've seen it done with someone like you've described, and it looked great. Just a thought.
