How Ironic?! - 04-02-2007, 06:03 PM

So... UPS delivered all my new studio gear today. After I get home from work, I'm unpackaging everything and setting it all up... and my cell phone rings. Some unknown 469 number. I figured, oh well, I'll indulge... "Hello". There's a brief pause and then I hear, "Wil?"...

Wil: Yes.
Caller: This is so and so.
Wil: Oh, Hi. How are you?...
Caller: I'm great. I need a photo...
Wil: Ok. Of what?
Caller: I'm getting new business cards and I need a headshot.
Wil: (laughing on the inside) Um. Ok.
....

Long story short (I know... too late), I'm doing his headshot tomorrow at 10:30. How weird is that!

How is that ironic you ask? Well, I've been a photographer for quite a while... no one has EVER asked me to do anything other than sports, weddings, and events; nothing studio-related... until the second I'm unpacking studio gear!

Wild!

Great timing. Congrats on getting your new gear. Mine should be here on Friday - can't wait! That is, the part that I did not order from B&H. Can't believe they just shut their doors for a week and a half. They must think they are in Europe or something.

Murphys law sometimes works to our benefit. See for me its always the opposite. EX: I tried being a fulltime freelance photographer last year, did it for a little over a year. It was the last 3 months that killed it for my wife. I couldn't land a paid shoot to save my life. So, I cave, get a day job, not 2 days after I start that job and Im getting non-stop phone calls and emails booking paid shoots.
Not only am I NOT able to use my phone while working, I cant check emails either. So now I have a bunch of potential customers who have to wait until my lunch time to get back to them, half of them want weekday shoots (im working.....NOW...not two months ago) and the other half want weekend. So now, im booked 2 nights a week (AFTER work) for headshots, and every weekend until end of April...so I will be working 7 days a week for the next month. My wife says its Karma for taking the year off (she never thought I was working because I only shot a few times a week but made NICE $$). I call it Murphy's law.

@Rusty: Thanks!

@Don: That you very much Don! I truly appreciate the offer. I've been meaning to sign up for your classes but I've been quite busy. I took one of Brad's recently and very much enjoyed it. It shouldn't be too difficult... he can't possibly want something "strange" for a business card headshot... right!?

@_/oe: LOL. Isn't that the truth! That'll be here soon enough... and then all the camera gear receipts must be "funneled" through different channels!

@Tom: Ain't that the truth!

@Scott: You know, I thought about that... for a very very brief second. LOL.

@Brandon: Sorry about your luck... but it sounds like it has turned around and hopefully you'll be able to dump that 9/5'er real soon!

@Everyone: Thanks for the comments!

Here are a few shots of the new studio... ahem, I mean, Living room! Oh, and ignore the fact that every light in the room is on... that's just for the photo.

And another thing... yes, the paper background IS crooked. And the pulley idea I had... don't bother. It's a pain and isn't as convenient as I thought it would be. But hey, it works and it is extremely cheap!

Wil, did you decide against the 7' octodome? If so, what changed your mind?
