It's funny. I shoot close to eighty long exposure frames trying to catch some lighting last night and what shows up on one frame where I'm just trying to catch the clouds?

Very nice. I like the way the darker clouds encircle the lightning.

Love it. Especially with the colours on the fence, and the chain link pattern being replicated in the lightning. Nicely cropped as well.

I have no idea how that applies here, but I have never used it before ( and probably won't again )...

Okay so I'm brand new at photography and just got my Canon XTi Monday.
I was trying to get some shots like that last night and the camera would not take it at all. Why? Any pointers would be great.

Thanks Erica

I took some shots of the storm too ....havent had a chance to download them yet I will try to post some tomorrow.......
Brocks mom ..you have to have a tripod ...I have had a lot of luck with this setup.....for thin lightning a smaller aperture works better usually you want the exposure to be between 1-8 seconds. I just pick an area of the sky and start taking pictures .....

Also you can purchase a lightning trigger

Tom, you know as well as I do, that anyone whose been in photography for any length of time knows that feeling all too well.

I shot these link last night with my 10D, very similar camera....

I will post my settings there, so as not to hijack thread here.

I started thsi thread so, by all means, feel free to post what you have of the storm. I thought about posting to the nature forum but I decided to post here because of the local event nature of the storm itself. Let's see pix if you got 'em! I'd also like to hear from anyone whose had success at lighting photos and tell us what techniques and settings work for you.

As for my photo. I mostly tried about 20-30 second exposures at ISO 100 and about f22 to keep my depth of field, well, deep! The photo I posted here was actually shot at ISO 400, 1/3 sec. at f3.5. I was shooting the cloud formations and accidently caught this. I didn't even know I had this one untill I started looking at them in PP. In Adobe Lightroom, I set my tone curve for strong contrast, set my color temp to about 5300, added a bit of green tint and came up with this.
