My friend Joe comes down from Salt Lake and spends the week-end with us every year for the NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway. On Sunday we go out pretty early to get a parking spot that will get us out of the race traffic in time to take him back to DFW to catch his flight home.
So that gives us about 5 hours to wait for the start of the race, and find something to occupy ourselves. This year we decided to try to catch snapshots of the drivers as they are transported in golf carts to the Sponsor's Hospitality Tents, where they make appearances for the sponsors and earn some of that big money that was contributed to finance their race teams.
We noticed that they all seemed to be going into this one gate, so we hoofed it down there, and Joe spotted drivers for me and I snapped pictures. The light was all wrong, from the wrong direction, etc. etc. Nothing to be done, but snap away.
We started talking to a young couple working the gate, making sure that only authorized people got in. Turns out the young lady is a huge NASCAR fan, and in particular a Kasey Kahne fan.
We happened to be there when Kasey left and he stopped his cart to give her an autograph on an "action figure" of himself that she had. I was able to snap these shots for her.
To say that she was thrilled is an understatement, and to get pictures of the event as well made her day. She is one of the nicest persons I believe I've ever met.
