Dallas zoo Photo Safari - 06-09-2005, 03:25 PM

I just talked to Cathy Burkey, Dallas zoo photographer this morning and she will has the photo Safari in next couple weeks, Jun 25.

I don't have the detail of the coverage but i heard you get in an hour before the zoo opens to the public and after the photo techniques session, Cathy will guide the group on a 4 hours expedition to few habitats.

The animals may get special treatment,(food i assume) during the tour, they get really perk up so you get the best kodak moment.

http://www.dallaszoo.com/oth/oth.asp?page=ps

She will send me the rest of the information and registration by mail and will be on vacation next week. If you are interested in getting in, call her now before she is gone.

Hey, good for zoo-get-together eh?

Looks like a great opportunity, wish the Houston zoo would do something like that. I'm actually going to be in the Dallas area that day, but I'm already booked. Going to the PugMug Tiger Shoot that morning and then to my newphew's 1st birthday party.

I was told they do this once a month but last time i heard about it was like 2-3 months ago. If you miss this, there may be another one next month or so...

I'll have to keep that in mind, we usually go to Dallas a few times a year at least to visit my brother and his family.

I attended one of these last year. Cathy is great and the cost is very resonable. Since the group is there so early, there's very little problems with bystanders. The tour is timed with the animals being feed so they are a lot more active. And they even tried to put up cover so there wouldn't be glass glare at the Tiger exhibit. Some of the caretakers were even on hand to answer any questions about the species, natural habitats, etc.

Overall, I had a great time!

I agree with Linda. I went on one last year and it was very nice. There were even a few goodies like some free film.

While big glass is useful most of the time, there are occasions for some shorter stuff. The Safari moves all over the zoo, so it is helpful to have a backpack or something on wheels unless you're training for a triathlon.

I received the infor and Registration form from her yesterday, it look like the 25th could be the last trip this seasion.

It says June 18, 2005 but She told me on the phone she'll be on Vacation and 25th would be the correct date.

Next safari date is Oct 1, 2005.

Do you have to register beforehand? It sounds like anyone wanting to join at this point will have to wait until Monday to get in?

brad,
When i asked what I have to do to get in, she said the registration form will be in the mail and i have to send it in. Perhaps those who been there before knew better than me if walk-in is ok since she is on vacation now. But it's worth to make the call if you are interested in getting in. May be talk to her assistant ( if she got one) or staff know a thing or two about the safari.

Minimium participants to get this going is 10. We can probably schedule a different date if we get enough people over here. That we have to talk to her.

And don't forget the zoo's annual photo contest that continues through September 30. The details are on the zoo's site. The rules allow you to maintain ownership of your entries. I've been asked to be one of the judges this year, so let the bribery commence. 8)

I just talked to Cathy and signed myself and my son up for this Saturday's safari. It sounded like she still had some slots open if anyone else is interested.
