Hello All-
My husband bought me a Canon EOS a couple of weeks ago, and I would like to take some classes on using all of it's features as well as photo theory.
Any suggestions? I checked out the colleges by me (Bedford) and most of the classes started June 4th.

I am finding that hanging out here is probably a very good first step.
A class might be able to focus on specific questions and give feedback. But, you can most likely get the same things here. Find what you like to shoot, take some shots and post them here. I have done that a couple of times and gotten some good feedback. The folks around here seem to kinda take it easy and are more encouraging with beginners. As you get better, the critique and comments (C&C) get tougher. That is how it should be. As your skill develops you need more critical reviews of your stuff. Go to some of the workshops or tag along with a veteran.
I considered taking a class at a local JC. It might have helped, I don't know. For me, it's taking pictures and seeing what worked and what didn't and figuring out why. I am finding that the learning curve is steeper than I thought. It's fairly easy to become better than average. It is much tougher to become good.
Maybe someday...

TIA | There is definitely a great benefit to observing/shooting with a pro and also just you shooting. So if you have the opportunities, go for it. Here's a couple links that's helped me establish at least some sort of foundation that led to a better understanding of information pro's share here on TPF or out and about. Hope it'll help you out as well. http://morguefile.com/archive/classroom.php http://www.photonhead.com/

If you search online you can find classes and videos dedicated to just your camera. That helps with the short term need. The long term question of theory, I don't think there are any short classes for that. It is a fun, long term adventure that I too am just starting.

I second contacting Brad. He is organized, knowledgeable, and a good communicator.
Folks on this forum are great about answering questions as well. Have fun with your new toy!

Photo theory! Wow - ambitious. What kind of photography are you interested in? There are lots of classes in the workshop thread. We teach wedding photography classes. Take a peek in there and see. There are also classes offered via the PPA.

Check out Brookhaven College. I took a Basic 35mm (digital is allowed) class there a few months ago. The instructor is Jorge Martinez and I enjoyed and learned a lot from his class. I am now signing up for the Low Light Photography class that starts next week. Most of the classes will be on location which is the best way to learn I think.
Plus it is pretty cheap too, $85 -$90.

GTG on the Fort Worth side of the DFW sure would be nice. I could use a crash course myself. Mike, are you volunteering to teach it

Kelly, I would strongly suggest that you find yourself a good basic photography class to get started. Too many folks skip right over the basics... understanding f-stops, shutter speeds, ISO (and how they all relate to one another) as well as the basics of light (not "lighting", but simply light... the light as it exists in the scene you are working with... it's color, it's quality, it's quantity, it's direction. Once you know how to use your camera effectively in all the manual modes THEN you are ready to branch out into other more in-depth learing. Try a city college in your area, or call the camera store he bought the camera at to see if they offer basic classes on how to use it. (Great choice, by the way, to buy Canon!) Here's a link to their Explorers site... a great resource for learning, and they always have a listing of educational events... http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/control...ArtistsListAct
Hope that helps!
