Kayaker Photo Op - Sat - Lk Grapevine - 06-21-2007, 01:17 PM

Some TPFers have asked to be notified when I hear of an opportunity to shoot kayakers (with a camera). This Saturday at Meadowmere Park on Lake Grapevine from 10-4 is the first annual Kayak Festival of Texas. No whitewater and mostly touring and sea kayaks. You will have a chance to demo a boat and eat a hot dog as well as snap a few pictures of kayakers doing there thing - including Eskimo rolls. There is no official website for this event - strictly word of mouth. However, there should be about 50 paddlers there. I will be the big guy with a khaki hat and a long yellow boat or camera with a big white lens. Come by if you are bored. One of the local outfitters will have boats there to demo. Entry fee for the park is $5 per car.

BTW, I would love to have a photo of myself in my boat. I have thousands of pics of other folks but not a single good one of myself - just in case someone decides to come out.

Can you post some more specific information about which area of lake Grapevine this will be? I'm looking for something to fill time in the morning until 1230 when I'm heading to Ennis...and this seems like it would be a pretty cool event...

Can't promise the pics will be too great - but I'd be happy to share with you what turns out...

Hmmm...I live about 500 feet from the west entrance to Meadowmere Park, but unfortunately I'm working on Saturday (what else is new ). If I get home early enough, I'll try to make it out there.

Make it out if you can. There is a pretty active group of kayakers in DFW and we go on exotic adventures that include camping , gourmet cooking, and lots of grape juice and/or single malt around the camp fire.

Rusty -

Well - I made it out there about 11-1115 and stayed about 30-45 minutes.

I asked a few people if they knew a Rusty, but being a somewhat shy person to begin with, I gave up after two 'no's' and just hid behind my camera.

I did get several pictures but am still doing the post on them. I'll PM you and send you a link to the results - at this stage in the game, I'll be happy to let anyone who wants a web-resolution copy of the final product have them for free...

I'm hoping you were still out there and I got you without knowing it - given you're comment about always taking the pictures and never being in any...

Ken,

I was feeling more than a little under the weather on Saturday morning so I did not make it out to the event. However, I would like to see what you got.

Rusty -

Sorry to hear you were so under the weather.

I've finally gotten around to the post on these - the whole set is up at http://www.flickr.com/txmanx

Feel free to pass the link on to other members in your kayaking group, and if they want any higher res images, please have them contact me.

Here are a few though...

Ken, very cool. I will pass the word along to the DFW Paddlers group. I'm sure some of them will be interested.

As it turns out, I had an inner ear infection from spending too much time upside down in a kayak. Took me almost three weeks to kick it. Good to be back on the water again.
