Cool Sat Jun 30th Downtown Shoot with Fireworks And Flooded Trinity - 06-28-2007, 04:22 PM

This Saturday Night could be one great photo op for those willing to try to do some shooting of the Downtown Skyline since that Trinity Fest thing is going on, we have the Trinity River at about 39 ft which is the highest that it has been in over a decade and it may be even higher then if they open up some floodgates upriver and we may have an overcast sky.

Since the Fireworks are supposed to be over by the AA Arena I would say that setting up somewhere along the levee over near Sylvan Ave would be the place to go to get the angles and downtown in the background done up right.

This is defenitely a tripod shoot since to try to get the Trinity smoothed out you will maybe need multiple second if not even a full minute exposure time-let the fireworks fill up the frame- and shoot a fairly wide angle.

So you need to get accross into West Dallas and then go up Sylvan to where the road is closed-barracades- pull off and park and then hump it up onto the levee and set up and hope that someone doesn't come by and visit you but there may be some people there anyway to watch the fireworks show that just don't want to mess with the AA crowds.

Fireworks are sheduled for around 9:30 per the TF website and sunset is at around 8:50 so I would say that you need to be there no later than 8:15 to set up for the sunset shots-depending on the weather.

It would be super cool if you added a lightening storm in the background!

I can't probably make this because of the ankle mess and not being able to hump it up that levee to set up but thought that others may try to get this photo op with the river at major flood levels and get that reflecting skyline in the wide Trinity and then you toss in the Fireworks show and this could be a great photo op.

If anyone wants to go by there tommorow or Sat during the day and figure out if there is a better place closer in that would have the right angles please do. (They may actually be shooting the fireworks off of the Singleton Blvd Bridge (which has been used before) or the AA Parking lot since the fest is in parking lot E since they can't shoot from the river which is where they have set up in the past for these types of festivals on that end of downtown).

Paul, could you give a detail direction on how to get to the spot you mentioned in your post? I would try to get there.

http://maps.google.com/maps
Put in Singleton Blvd and then look to the Sylvan Ave Bridge to the North. You can cross the Trinity on the Commerce Street Bridge, the Singleton AveBridge (continental viaduct) *which may be closed if they are shooting the fireworks from it, or going further north to the Inwood Road Bridge and then going up or down Canada Street which runs right next to the Levee. If memory serves me right there are a couple places along the road where you can pull off of Canada and walk up the levee (trails) but I do know that you can defenitely get onto the levee at the Sylvan Road Crossing which of course is closed to traffic because it is a low water crossing so now under water. Looking at the map again you may want to go a bit south of Sylvan just to get downtown framed in the shot and have the fireworks included. I would say at this distance maybe a 200mm would be a good lens even with a 1.5 or 1.6 crop body (your about 1.5 miles from downtown here if not further).

OK after seeing where Lot H is you may actually have to go North of Sylvan towards Inwood to get the angle down to have the FW in the center of a Downtown shot.

thanks for the direction, looks like the best spot will be along Canada dr. between inwood and Sylvan. By the way, how is the neighborhood there? is it safe? Also, wondering if any other TPFers wanna go?

Weather doesn't look good for tonight. Looks like a line of storms heading for Dallas right now, maybe they will go west of Downtown.
