I need a country road.. dusty and gravel would be great.. and with a cross road would be great, too... but it has to be desolate.. nothing else around.
Anyone know of one nearby?

Hey Brad ... I know of several, however they are a quite a drive from Arlington ...
Here's a spot that describes what you might like .... http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...5785&z=14&om=1
Note where CR-475 crosses the creek, then joins up with CR-476 ... both 476 and 475 used to have steel one lane bridges across the creek before the county decided to remove them and replace them with concrete monsters ...
They still are dirt roads, and the scenery is wonderful in that area ... there is a huge 30-50acre pond just to the west of the creek on 475, but it is private property ... but some nice sunsets .....
I'm going to be out of pocket until Sunday (I'm up in Connecticutt on biz) ... so hope this helps you out ...
If it rains, CR-475 can be an absolute mess ... so you might need to kick it into 4-wheel drive ...
later.

Brad - the roads through Hagerman NWR ( about 1.5 hrs north ) are gravel/dusty and a few are pretty isolated. But they may still be under water - you need to call and check on their condition. Also, south of and around Granbury you can find dirt roads off blacktop all over the place. 'Course I can't give you exact spots, but it's a little closer.

Thanks, all... Cinda: I'd already thought of Granbury.. may try that.. may also tray Hagerman.
This is for a promotional poster for a movie called "Gallows Road" so the more desolate the better. LOL

You may want to check out the area between Mineral Wells and Possum Kingdom Lake. You start getting into the rocky landscapes with juniper/cactus/mesquite scrub and some cool mesas for background. Hwy 4 north of Palo Pinto may put you in a good area.

Denton. Lots of desolate county farm roads on the outskirts of town and the surrounding parts, near Justin, Aubrey, Argyle etc. The only thing I can think of that might be a hinderance is that there are a lot of trees around. But, out near Justin, it clears out and becomes emptier: lots of cattle fields. Go up 35W and exit FM 407 and head west. Or if in Denton, go to the airport and take any road west.

Here are a few Ideas for you.
McKinney- Off of Custer and Virginia (if you are going up N on Custer, turn left on Virginia, go down a few miles and you will see some dirt roads on your right.
If you want truly out in the middle of no where. Go N to the Red River..Sivels Bend...out in the Middle of no where, plenty of dirt roads. It is off of 82 and North of Moss Lake (NW of Gainesville). I know the area well ( uncle has 40 acres up there, grand parents grew up on the river).

If you are going up to Gainesville and the Moss Lake area is not desolate enough, go a bit further west to Muenster on Hwy 82. (stop in Lindsay for some great BBQ). the road north out of Muenster goes to Bulcher, which is up by the river, and there is a motocross park along the river. There is nothing at Bulcher but one old church building.
Anyway, at Bulcher the paved road heads back southwest to St Jo, which is also on Hwy 82. The paved road makes a big loop Muenster to Bulcher to St Jo. there are a number of gravel roads to choose from that go across the loop (if that makes sense). There are some really flat treeless areas inside that loop, both before and after you drop down off the high ground.
I havn't been up there in quite awhile, so the county may have paved some of those roads by now.
I grew up in Gainesville.

Hey Jerry:
You grew up in Gainesville...I graduated there in 94. But the area I am talking about is North of Moss Lake...It is desolate enough that that did an episode of Myth Busters ( shot a rocket propelled car into the air). The road to Moss Lake turns into a dirt road the further N you go. The areas I am speaking of are in the Sivels Bend area...
Muenster is another great area, and if you are there, go to Fischer's Meat Market...another great place to get meat and cheese.

yeah - GHS '65.
I certainly agree that the area you suggest is out in the boonies. My impression is that Brad wants a desolate tree-less road, but I could be wrong. I just thought that if he drives all the way up there, he might like an alternate. The areas around old Camp Howes might be good for him too, but last time I was around there, they had paved most of the roads.
Fisher's is a great German Market. The Center in Muenster also serves great German Food. Keep those in mind Brad, when you get hungry.
Brad, some of the roads going south out of Lindsay, and then headed west are gravel, and could be good. I just don't know how to describe how to find them. Ask someone there how to get to Myra the back way.

Jerry...
Do you remember anyone from there. My dad grew up in Woodbine, went to school in Calisburg, but hung around Gainesville...and his dad was a plumber and known around town. Last name is Capps.
