Wow lots of people interested in this race, sorry have I havent threw in my $.02 yet. You dont need that much glass for this race its really close (too close if you have access). Its not that easy to get shots from the general spectator area (lots of trees and other crap in the way). Based on insurance regulations nobody without signed forms from SDBA is SUPPOSED to be infront of the ropes in the spectator area. Security is usually fort worth or lake worth police (dont remember which one) not low wage guys so do what you want. Heres my stuff from last year all shot with the 300f/4 lens and some are from infront of the spectator area and some from a boat they had set up for media. Should be 100+ boats totals with 80% going well over 100 mph and some that are capable of over 250 mph. This is the next to last race of the season so everybody is going for the points.

Heres a video clip to give you some idea how close you are from infront of the spectator area. I really wouldnt recommend it for people who dont have an idea of what these boats are capable of. If you have ever seen the video on RealTV of the drag boat going into the crowd, that was at this race numerous years ago.
Hope that helps.
