Free place to shoot Senior pics? - 08-22-2007, 04:19 PM

Well the LC Canals is now enforcing their permit ($50 a shoot) and that is where I was planning on shooting a senior session next week... Any ideas on where to shoot for free? Thanks!

That's odd.

I remember that the city used to require a permit, but never enforced it... Now it's $50 each time???

Wonder how that effects the photographers (Sallee) that have the studio there on the canal? LOL

Who would enforce this ? Las Colinas PD ? Is there a ticket for 'taking photos without a permit "

Does anyone remember the Robin Williams movie " Popeye " ???

Here is the information.

It looks like they have always had this in place, but apparently have not enforced it.

I though it was a public walkway! There is nobody standing there to admit you into the canals. Who is suppose to collect the fee ? Maybe next time I am hard up for cash I will stand down by the canals and tell photographers " I am the PPD (photography police dept)! LOL.

How about the stockyards area ? I have never seen anyone get a hassle there.

It seems that more and more locations are jumping on the band wagon to collect a few dollars from photographers who shoot seniors, brides, families, etc. I guess we'll just have to either eat the fees or make sure they are disclosed in the contract. It sure does put a damper on the spontenaity of going to a location. I hate to pay $50 for a permit, and then have the shoot cancelled for some reason, and have to pay for another permit on another day.

How about a state issued "license" for photographers ? That way, we could get screwed by the state instead of each individual location....... oops, too political, my bad.

All I know.. the Canals are (have been) dying as a viable business district.. stuff closing all over the place.. I guess they want to officially run everyone off by charging to walk on the canal with a camera... Silly. I thought it was public property too.. Soon you won't be able to take a picture in front of your house unless you are on YOUR property.

Funny.. I see JB Sallee photo studio location on their map. Listed as private property and I also see much of the area marked off as not allowed even with Permit. Ironic... I just saw a commercial on TV the other day where the speaker was walking up the stairs there in Las Colinas (MARKED AS NOT PERMITABLE on the map).

Oh well.. that place has burned me out anyway after shooting there for years. The little bar there will surely miss my biz.. LOL

The canals in Las Colinas are private property. The only public property is the City of Irving Right of Way. But it's ashame they start doign things like that. You'd think the Botanic Gardens in Ft Worth would be free because it's run by the parks department. But i guess eveyone has to get their share of the money pie.

The Right of Way is what they are charging for. Check out the map...Most other private areas state property management must approve...The Botanic Gardens are run by the Botanic Society and not the City, thus the charges there (or so we were told).

If they plan on attending a local university, that's a nice place to shoot. Or if their highschool campus is pretty nice, that works. Open up the aperture and noone knows where you're at. Parks and greenery is always a safe bet. As far as indoors, The courthouse in Denton and the Admin building at UNT. those are just local spots for me though.
