Nice composition on these, Bruce. I still need to get there.

Smile Thanks - 09-23-2007, 10:44 PM

Thanks for the kind feedback. As many times as I've been there, I've never been to the "Fuller Gardens" area. I was quite pleasantly surprised. Added within the last year is the TEXAS NATIVE FOREST BOARDWALK which also is a treat.

Great job of framing these Bruce. I've been on the Boardwalk there late last winter. They did a nice job building that. I need to get back over there too soon.

Bruce, I've been admiring your IR photographs and I have been trying some myself. I just can't seem to get mine as crisp (focus-wise) as those you are displaying. What equipment are you using and what are your post-processing steps?

Thanks for the compliment, Dustin.

I use a converted Sony F707 (IR+visible) with a Maxmax XDP IR Dual Plane IR-Pass Filter. This camera has a very sharp lens to begin with.

I usually shoot in Sepia (no b&w setting on this camera) and convert to B&W in post. I've found the key in post is to bring out good contrast AND to be sure to also USM sharpen AFTER resizing (e.g., 800x600) -- just before posting. For this final sharpening, I most often selectively sharpen: just "lassoing" the key areas (where the viewer's eye likely will rest) and applying the final sharpening to those.

I checked out your online IR album, and I must say those photos look pretty good, so maybe a final sharpening is part of your answer. Experiment on your final resized versions to see what techniques work best for your photos.

For a simplified post processing work flow, consult this most helpful IR site:

First off thank you. I'm still a little shaky while trying to understand the USM. And the selective sharpening....why didn't I think of that? It makes so much sense.

Nice! - 09-27-2007, 09:35 PM

Looks like you were also enchanted by that little pool... I like your framing better than mine though. I'll have to go back and try again soon :)
