Forth Worth Zoo - 09-25-2007, 11:25 AM

Quick question for anyone who’s been out to the Forth Worth Zoo, would 70-200mm lens be long enough to reach Lions, Tiger and Gorillas, etc. to get a decent close up shots?

The 70-200 will be fine. Don't expect extreme close-ups but I've used the 70-200 with good results on all three of the species you're asking about.

200mm - 09-25-2007, 01:01 PM

It depends on what kind of shots you want. I shot the bigger animals with my 70-300mm because I wanted some extreme close ups of their eyes: http://g3pix.com/ftwzoo1.html

But of body shots you will be fine. I used the 18-200mm lens for the reptiles. I like close ups and seeing the eyes of animal like the one below. Looking forward to see your zoo shots.

My latest zoo trip was with the 70-200 only (ok, and some macro tubes for the parakeets and flowers)...

Note that these were shot on a 5D, so if you have a crop sensor, you'll get even closer.

my favorite lens at the zoo. If I need closer I'll pop the 1.4X, but rarely.

Man, that is up close. I love that shot.

I want to shoot the bodies as well as some up close shots.

I think that should be more than enough lens. I took all of these with a sony f707 P&S but to be fair minus the lion i wasnt more than 70ft from the animals. Other than the lion and the gorilla the rest were taken from behind glass. I put a UV filter on my camera and just found a clean spot on the glass and stuck it to the glass. Anyway back to your question i will with your 70-200 you will have more than enough lens.
