I tried looking it up to see if it was a VORTAC, but I could not find anything on it.
I will have to listen to the identifier on my scanner next time I am by there.

That is definitely a VORTAC. Most of the time they are situated on airport property and are at ground level. This one looks like it needed to be elevated due to the amount of buildings surrounding it. VORTAC's will go the way of the dinosaur soon. Most modern aircraft now use GPS as their primary Navigation aid.

There are a bunch over the Metroplex, like the one just West of I35E between Royal and Walnut Hill, I think it is for Love Field.

VORTAC go away. Not at the pace our government moves. We may still be using them until 2107

VOR or VORTAC...sure wouldn't want to have one in my backyard, especially if it is associated with an instrument approach. On the other hand, it might have an entertainment value during a lightning storm!

Dane
We did get a little off track.

These are good pictures, and thanks for sharing them . I'd live there only after I got a radiation reading.

In my line of work we call this High Risk....I am a mortgage consultant full time. When we look at houses and appraisals we risk base them on area and marektability....

But they are fun to look at.

Interesting photos. I certainly hope they got a HUGE discount on these houses. It would be interesting during a lightning storm.

Thanks for sharing.

How much more would the insurance be on these houses because you call them high risk due to the homing devices?

I think
You are correct sir.

There are a few older commercial aircraft out there that still use VORTAC's. The newer generation aircraft however use dual GPS units. With GPS there is no need for huge ground antennas. We still fly over these fixes because they define the different jet airways but there is no need to tune them in anymore.
GPS units are coming down in price for general aviation as well. Once the majority of aircraft make the switch to GPS I can't imagine the government continuing the upkeep on these old NAVAIDS.

As for insurance I could not tell you. But what I mean by high risk is the resale value. We are a large lender and a large bank. Some of our loans are portfolio (we lend the money out of our own pockets). When we do these type of loans we look at the marketability of the home if something was to happen (Foreclosure). Risk based is low, medium and high based on the area and what is around the home. In this case, would you want to buy a home that had the view of this tower every time you looked out the window?

But that is off topic. It is cool to see that type of equip still around.
