Cemeteries, Which is your favorite? - 10-10-2007, 05:08 PM

I love Cemeteries. When I ever I get down, want to have a good day shooting I take a break and go to my favorite cementery. Well I don't have one here in the Dallas area (yet) so share with me your favorite. And tell me why you like it.

My hands down favorite is OAKWOOD CEMETERY in Ft. Worth.

Their description is pretty accurate. It has a great view of Ft. Worth. It has famous as well as infamous people buried there (Lee Harvey Oswald) and spans many years which gives it a very historical atmosphere considering the relatively short history of Texas.

"Cementeries"? Are you talking about places where they make cement? I think that there's one down by Midlothian, but I don't know of many others. Or, as Tom seems to think, are you talking about "cemetaries"?

I've totally given up on trying to get people to spell even the thread titles correctly. Besides, given the nature of Texas soil, I think Cementeries might be an accurate description.

Ah, yes, OSWALD. My daughter had a high school project to find his grave site which eventually was documented on the web. You can't walk in and get directions to the site. However...it can be found.

Gee, I guess both. Dead people are buired there, alot in concrete valts( at least the newer ones are)!

A cemetery is a place in which dead bodies and cremated remains are buried. The term cemetery (from Greek κοιμητήριον: sleeping place) implies that the land is specifically designated as a burying ground. Cemeteries in the Western world are the place where the final ceremonies of death are observed. These ceremonies or rites differ according to cultural practice and religious belief.

Have you been to the one in Dallas? It's near Pioneer Plaza (where the cattle heard sculpture is). Not sure of the name off hand, but there are lots of old tombstones (my favorite!)

Mansfield has an interesting one as well. There are even tomb stones "outside" of the cemetery. You'll just have to go there to see. I have taken numerous images there.

There's a historic one in Arlington off of Cooper, but I have not been to it.

Oakwood in Fort Worth is nice and it has decent views. Another cemetery I am quite fond of is Oakwood Cemetery in Waco (though I'm not quite sure whther or not they are owned and managed by the same group).

There are several in Parker County. Including this one just east of Garner in western Parker County. Here is one of the graves. "Ned Rippy and Wife Killed by Indians". . .and FYI, it's off the beaten path.

I don't think it's open to the public though, so beware.

The old Grapevine Cemetery is nice as well as the Minter's Chapel Cemetery on the DFW Airport grounds. The National Cemetery in Grand Prairie is gorgeous but modern in appearence but still quite photogenic. My favorites are Oakwood and Greenwood in Ft. Worth and Pioneer Rest, also in Ft. Worth. All are older and have amny historic figures buried there. Oakwood and Pioneer Rest haveing many old pioneer and other interesting markers and tombs and Greenwood is more modern but has some incredible cemetery art.

Ummm.... thanks for the definition but I already knew what a cemetary was. Your original post, before it was edited, used the word, "cementaries" several times, which is what made me wonder if you were looking for a concrete plant or something. A lot of people get into industrial photography so the original post didn't seem all that strange.

Don't know how far you want to go, but in Terrell just east of Dallas, is a cemetary that has some really great sculpted headstones and statues.
