Looking for an abandoned building for engagement session - 10-22-2007, 02:50 PM

Hi there

PLEASE help me

I have a client that wants to do a session inside an abandoned building and with an urban atmosphere.

I have seen some photographers doing this but I do not know where to go.

Any ideas?

If not, what are som good locations in downtown to get some great engagement shots?

THANK YOU- Andrea

maybe try the west end? I haven't been there in years, so I'm not sure how much is still abandoned, but there are some great urban places in and around there.

There is one in Fort Worth up by the stockyards, I don't know how safe it is, but I think a few photogs here have been.

Keep in mind that unoccupied buildings usually are not really "abandoned" and going into one is legally trespassing. I have a friend that was arrested for photographing on railroad property in his little west Texas town. Be very careful.

Thanks Don

Yes- I know. I think I am going to try to steer my clients away from this idea and just do the downtown, outside photos.

I think it would be creepy anyways.

You may find the Cotton Mill in McKinney to be what you're looking for...it has that feeling...most of it's undergoing renovation, but photographers can shoot there for $50/hour.

It has a very cool urban feel...really nice.

I use studio space there...and everyone loves it...

Some of it has been renovated, but the part that isn't looks like a cool urban abandoned building...even the outdoor portion behind is really neat.

The Cotton Mill in McKinney is a really great place for a shoot. Like Don said, unoccupied buildings and not always abandoned and can get you and your party a fine for trespassing along with all the hassle of trying to talk to the cops and the embarassment in front of your clients. The Place in the stockyards area is not abandoned and has a securty guard there 24/7. Also, ALL "abandoned" locations should be considered dangerous and, unless you know what you're doing, should be avoided. Again, the place in the stockyards is full of falling roofs and ceilings as well as holes ranging from "ankle-breaker" size on up to some that you can drop into and fall at least 20 or more feet. I haven't even begun to talk about the homeless and gang members that also frequent these sites. Check around on the web for sites on urban exploration and get in touch with someone who can escort you to some of these sites if you absolutely have to get into one.

There are no "Abandoned Stockyards" in Ft. Worth. There are some unoccupied buildings in the stockyard area of Ft. Worth. They were part of the Swift Meat Packing Co. Currently some of them are being used by a movie production company for the filming of Prison Break. Security will be pretty tight until that is finished.
