Help, need fast camera repair in DFW.. or advice - 10-26-2007, 12:08 AM

ok, so my 20d is having weird problems.
on Av priority it's stuck on wide open, which is the setting I had to resort to today when I shot a highschool football game. On Tv , it's stuck at 30 seconds and on Manual I can adjust the f-stop, but the shutter is stuck on "bulb". WTF? Anyway, I have a shoot on Saturday night and want to get it fixed before then. Is this a firmware problem?, could an update work, if so, anyone have links. otherwise, I live in Denton. any close places that can take a look at it.

I've tried, putting on different lenses, and removing the battery. any other tricks i could try

thanks guys,
-Jonny

hey jonny --

from your description, it sounds like one of the sensors that reads the scroll wheel is stuck "on", so that it is always "maxing" out the settings for the mode that you are in.

just a suggestion, but maybe spin (give it a good spin) the front finger wheel and the back thumb wheel around a bit and see if you can free up the stuck sensor. i dont know which one is the one that controls the variable setting on your 20d (i have a 300D, so no wheel on the back).

good luck!

just for fun (it must be the test engineer in me), i tried it out on my 300D... im gonna guess that your front wheel thinks its always being turned (or pushed) to the left...

in M mode, it goes to bulb
in Av mode, it goes to the largest aperture
in Tv mode, it goes to 30"

(if it were me, i'd be a little more agressive or enthusiastic with spinning that front wheel to see if i can free it up. however, the standard internet "do at your own risk" disclaimers apply here).

good luck, i hope its an easy fix.

PROBLEM SOLVED!

figured it out. I just had to sleep on it and think about it with a energetic and less frustrated mind.

The scroll bar on the battery grip was the one stuck. :)
fixed it, I don't know if it was turning it hard or taking off the grip and pressing in those little metal conductors or whatever they're called.

thanks

You just gotta love it when a possibly tragic problem is solved with an act so simple! I agree. You need to take massive quanities of photos this weekend just to make sure it is fixed correctly. :)
